You are stating Apple doesn't carry the latest video cards because they don't care about gamers? Why would Apple go after the family market (imac), the high end market (mac pro), switchers, and tout boot camp for running PC apps yet just artbitrarily decide to not support/offer the best GPU's?

I'm a bit offended by your elitist statement, which is honestly the exact stereotypical attitude most PC users eschew in Mac users.

Based upon your spurious assumption that every PC user is a gamer?

I'd say for starters, all the Macs are 1) built for people who want to use OS X, and 2) the addition of Windows is very nice, but has limitations. IMO it's geared more for the people that want to switch but cannot disconnect themselves from the Windows apps they know and love, as well as the corporate/business environment where using Windows apps is a necessary task.

There's a lot more to computing than gaming.

Now.. I agree somewhat. But welcome to the world of Apple, Inc. It's very common that the hardware lags somewhat. But most long time Apple users just take it in stride, for better or for worse. Iit's gotten worse since the shift to Intel hardware. Just wait until Santa Rosa comes out and keep an eye on the "Where is Santa Rosa?", "When will X have Santa Rosa?", and "Apple Sucks because X doesn't have Santa Rosa yet!".

Was tempted sorry, A 7600 class GPU is more then fine for Doom3 with all the bells and whistles. iMac has grown up after years of poor gpu's. 7600 class is just solid.

Yes, I make the assumption that PC users concerned with the release of newer GPU's (used for gaming) are gamers. I was under the impression for everything else the Quadros and the current cards more than suffice, I could be wrong.

The lack of patience is due to my PC background, I'm used to not being able to even keep up with hardware releases for better or worse.

At what resolution?
It appears that the only consumer level Mac with that is the 24" iMac which is a pretty huge resolution for a game to run on, surely?
Yet more temptation to spend another £349 on an iMac. :(

Oh it will have a hard time: http://reviews.cnet.com/Nvidia_GeForce_7600_GT_256MB/4505-8902_7-31768928.html

That's the desktop version and it barely manages 33 FPS at 1600X1200. Now, you take that in, it will probably barely get 20 FPS at 1920X1200. Anyone who plays FPS' knows that you can't play one lower than 40FPS.

Ouch.
I don't suppose there's a way to play it at a lower resolution but without it stretching?
I don't mean windowed mode, if it even exists for these games.

Doom 3 on full settings with everything turned on including the highest level textures *requires* a video card with 512mb, it won't even let you use the textures without it.

Negative, ultra setting requires a GPU with 512MB

I just booted up my old PC and tried. It says:

"Your bahbahbah the recommended requirements to try these settings, bah bah bah do you wish to continue:

Yes
*picture*
No"

Sure it chugs along @ about 30 FPS.

EDIT: Picture is better on 8800, but that's to be expected.
