iPad 9 here and still performing well. But knowing it has a limited future, went with iPad 10 ($199 military store sale). I'm not excited about paying the expected $449 for the 11. And I don't think I'd notice that much of a
performance improvement for my usage and needs. I also like to catch sale and clearance prices of iPads about to be replaced by the next generation (as is now). Some incredible deals.

Hardware is a least problem for ipads. It is the OS that is limited, clunky and generally useless for real work

I am in the market for iPad Air 13". What are your opinions - should I buy current model or wait for the upgrade?
Wait for 2 weeks to see what comes out, then decide. It is also likely that man retailers will be looking to clear stock of the old Airs, so if you decide there is no benefit to buying the new one, you should get a discount on the old one.

that's it pretty much...just growing impatient lol.

I will be in the market for a new iPad but want to wait for the new Air and 11th gen to see which one makes sense for me and my use case. Which is just as a Teams video call device and note taking mixed in with content streaming, and some gaming.
I imagine that (if your company allows it), a newer iPad with better NPU would be a better bet for automated note taking, based on the Teams meeting audio. The current M2 iPad Air should be able to handle this, but the new base iPad will likely be better (assuming it gets an A18 chip like the 16e). In terms of gaming I think the M4 chip would be the way to go for AAA games (Assassin's Creed, RE etc). The A18 can do a decent job with gaming, but that is for an iPhone screen resolution: extending that to the iPad resolution may push things a bit too far (even with MetalFX image reconstruction)
