I preordered from Amazon because I had a $100 gift card.
Also remember, Amazon is one of the few online retailers that does not charge tax (depending on where you live).

However, from a pure inventory standpoint preordering directly from Apple will most likely ship your iPod the soonest, at the expense of it costing about $25 more after tax.

You are assuming that every state has a sales tax and when I buy the new Touch, I will get it at a local Best Buy store without any sales tax .

I ordered at the Apple store, but went through my employer's Employee Purchase Plan link. Saved a little money that way. The discounts aren't that big for Apple products, but at least it covered the tax.
