Just trying to get a feeling where these small toys get used most.

I used mine at the gym, way back when I had one. I upgraded to the Nano because 850+ songs are a bitch to navigate through without a screen. IMHO, if you want a cheap MP3 player get a Sansa Clip or something. It has a screen, FM radio, 4GB capacity w/ expandable MicroSD slot too. And most of all you don't have to pay the Apple tax  Just letting you know you can get MUCH more for your hard-earned money.

 I wouldn't call a product that's $50 overly expensive. Your sensa doesn't have software to load podcasts automatically on it with 1 click.

I run about 20 miles a week with my shuffle. Best running companion, it's very lightweight and easy to use. I've started using my shuffle before bed (listen to stories before bed)

Personally I've always owned an iPod as my music player and nothing else... but like I said IMHO the Sansa is a good bet. Basically all the features of the 6G Nano (and more) for a Shuffle price. Sorry if I sound a bit anti-Apple, but I just can't bear the thought of a screenless music player :p

I just think this stuff is so cute, and can be taken to anywhere convenient.

I used to take it on runs (I dont run anymore, im too lazy). Just had 60ish of my favourite songs on it and could easily change the song if I was wearing my in-ear apple earphones.
I also used it for about 2 months between selling my iPhone 3G and getting an iPhone 4 as my main music player... thank god I've got the iPhone 4 for regular use now though.
They really are ideal for use while exercising though, but now mines just sitting there all alone because I'm too lazy to get off my butt.

I love to use my shuffle on short car rides. I guess I'm paranoid, but it bugs me to leave a classic/nano in the car and risk it being stolen if my car were to be broken into (knock on wood). Then there's always the 110+ summer heat that could damage my classic if I were to forget about it in the car.
I also use it when I'm doing homework. The other ipods are too distracting or just get in the way.

The shuffle is easiest ipod to replace if it's ever needed.

I wouldn't want a display. It's great there's still products around as simple and functional as the Shuffle. The promises of modern technique are tempting, I know - but there's no need to get nervous when you can't access your entire music library at all times, can't pick that specific song fit for that specific situation at all times. At most you'll devalue your beloved songs, at worst you get neurotic. There's no need to dust off your gramophone, but the shuffle is a nice and reasonable step back to what's needed. I use it at the gym, at the lake and going home from the pub. I love it.

Usually at home but I think most people use them when exercising.

I use mine in bed, I clip it to my pillow and have my favourite mellow songs on it to help zone me out and fall asleep. It's perfect for this as far as I'm concerned as it's small and light (so wont get in my way) and when your drifting off to sleep you don't necessarily want to listen to any particular song, and no screen means no light to disturb you!

I've also seen it used as a hair accessory! Check out the picture on the link below.

I use my second gen shuffle for running. I fill it up with a good mix of high-octane songs and put it on shuffle. The buttons are just big enough that I can easily raise or lower the volume and skip ahead to another song just by touch and with thin gloves on in the winter. Even after using it daily since the day I got it (a couple of years ago now), the battery is still going strong.

It doesn't do all the fancy stuff that the other iPods do, but I'd still vote for the second gen shuffle as the best iPod of all time. It is certainly my favorite.

I used to have one and I am getting another one soon but I always used it when I would go running/exercising.

I generally use it as my i-dont-care-if-it-gets-broken iPod in situations which I dont want to take large slabs of glass out with me.

Like the person above I use it when in bed - I can just clip it to the pillow and not worry about knocking it off like I used to do to my iPod touch all the time lol.

Work because of the ultra convenience of not having to look at the screen and fiddle with the buttons in my pocket..also not having a screen keeps me from being fickle with what songs I listen to making me more productive.

Use it for mowing the lawn, and sometimes the gym [though for me selecting songs is more important at the gym so usually the nano goes with me there].
