I have an iPad and a TV, but I always prefer watching movies on my TV because I like to be comfortable on my couch and I don’t want to hold the display or rest it on my lap for two hours. But I know a lot of people watch movies on their iPad, so I’m curious how they go about it.

Not talking about while commuting or traveling; my question is regarding watching movies at home.

Vote for all that apply. If “other”, please leave a comment explaining.

Note-
“Stand” refers to anything other than your hands that props up your iPad, and that in turn rests on a surface.
“Holding” means using at least one hand to hold it or hold it upright, even if the bottom rests on a surface.

Depends. If I’m eating a meal during it, it’ll be on my desk in a case so it’s upright horizontally, like a laptop screen. Otherwise, I’ll probably be watching it lying down. In this case, I’ll either 1) Have it in the case sitting upright on my stomach/chest, 2) Have no case and be holding it with both hands in the air, 3) Have no case and be holding it with one hand against my stomach/chest so it’s upright, or 4) Have no case and be laying on my side with the iPad”s weight on the bed while one arm keeps it at the angle I want it at.

good thread.

to me, one of the great advantages of a laptop is when viewing movies.
while lying down, watching a movie on a laptop, you can tilt the screen to 90 degree (straight up), or, make the angle more acute (less than 90), such as 80 or 75 or 70 (or much less even). for me, these slightly acute angles are about the best angle to watch a movie if laying down, with the laptop on my stomach/chest.

throughout apple's long device making history, its always had good hinges on it machines.
i am looking forward to the day that apple makes an iPad keyboard that has the ability to have an acute angle while its open. an apple case/keyboard. not a 3rd party one.
this, more than anything else, would encourage me to try to use an iPad in place of a laptop, in a more general sense, including trying to replace my macbook with an iPad for work as well.

I'm not sure this poll makes any sense. Where I put it is going to depend on where I am.

Also, are you asking because you want advice on where to put yours while watching a movie? The answer is wherever you want that is most comfortable for you.

Lap but don’t use my iPad to watch movies normally..more YouTube/football/NBA but having the Smart Keyboard helps.

It’s either on my lap or on the table but in both scenarios it’s attached to the Smart Keyboard which I use as a stand.

My iPad mini 4 is exclusively used on my lap but it too is in the Apple smart case which has a stand.

I do not uses cases, folios, So I have no kickstands to use.

But, a couch pillow works good to prop it up when I’m laying in bed watching a movie.

If I’m on the couch, me and my wife take turns holding it as we are usually both watching together.

I prefer do not use my iPad for watching anything. I do like to use a projector with my laptop.
