Maybe a bit technical question but still i want to know.

If i view a .gif in Safari, where does Lion save it temporally so i can view it? Is in on the hard drive or the RAM?

Usually, both. The browser will cache the file in temporary storage, but the RAM may also have it loaded while you're actively viewing the file.
