I am trouble-shooting a Mac that won't shutdown and thought I would check the startup items. However, after installing Sierra, it seems that they have been moved or deleted from the usual folders:
    Library/StartupItems and System/Library/StartupItems
Also there are no startup items listed for About-this-mac/System-report/Software/Startup-Items

I have already checked items listed at System_Prefs/Users&Groups/Login-Items.

    Where have they gone?

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchDaemons are common ones

Also to add to the above list, check /System/Library/Extensions/

The StartupItems folders have been largely deprecated for several versions of OS X.
You may find it helpful to download and run the application called EtreCheck which will list all of what you're looking for in an easy to understand format.

Thanks for the tips. I will try out EtreCheck. The developer's website reads well.

That did the trick! EtreCheck found numerous agents/daemons that I no longer use (Synk, Lacie, Seagate etc). After trashing them my iMac shuts down without problems,
