2018 MBP Silver, 15"
20 Vega
32 GB
512 GB Ram
i9

#1 - Chip on corner, obviously couldn't remove

#2 Apple couldn't explain what went wrong other than it wasn't suppose to be that way, the glass was like white, instead of black.

#3 Two chips on the lid right corner, could not be removed not glue

#4 arrived today, glue coming out of the black bezel below the glass and chipped one corner.

$4,000 macbook pro, on top of my bent ipad pro 11" -_-

I mean its not even being perfect per say, but not having glue coming out or nicks in the finish. Slight machiningissues, like scratches which is apart of machining which makes it look like shapes in the metal is okay, but glue coming out of bezels I don't want to take a razor blade to the screen.

2018 MBP not 2019.

First one of mine, perfect. No issues. Vega 20 i9 32gb, 2tb model.

Can you post some pictures of the glue so we can see?

Having been through several units myself with various flaws/problems I think the obvious answer to your question can be found by looking in the mirror.

Where is Apples QA these days? Your looking
at it man. They just ship it out and let the customer sort it out these days.

Do you have some photos to share?
Yes I'll upload shortly.

I have to chime in here because I just went through something similar and I didn't get a MBP I was happy with until number 5.

1 - Extremely uneven display with the left side being tinted noticeably pink and the right side green. Even the Apple store employee noticed it right away and said it shouldn't be like that.

2 - Loose USB ports on the left-hand side that had peripherals randomly disconnecting.

3 - Touch ID button so loose it felt like it was going to fall off each time I pressed it, and another uneven screen (although not as bad a 1).

4 - Literally came with a huge gash on the box and a large dent on the MBP itself.

Finally got lucky with #5, but it was a long and stressful process. The only one I would've considered keeping was 3 but I didn't want to settle after spending over $3k on the machine. I really hope I'm not flagged for too many returns but the number of defective MBPs I received was crazy.

That odd coating issue on the display and frequent T2 related panics where the issue with my Unit #1

Unit #2 had a series of sharp nicks along the edge near the speaker.

Unit #3 had runaway heat issues where the temps would randomly start bouncing off 100c even doing mundane tasks such as checking email or syncing my phone via iTunes. Also, several keys became unresponsive requiring repeated presses and the 8 key became sticky.

Unit #4 had several areas that appeared as smudges but wiped off with a bit of cleaner and elbow grease, but seriously wtf.

Sheesh you guys are picky.

What do you expect for North of THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS?

lol

Something with a little better QC than a $300 Acer Chromebook right? :) . Upper end models are north of $4K too :(

Edit: The iPad thing is ridiculous as well. I get it, you can return it if you receive a unit that is bent out of the box. But the point is there should never be one that is visibly bent to the human eye in the box to begin with.

So you kept 4?

Trying to decide on #5 before the end of day tomorrow. Mostly seems OK. The display isn's as even isn't as even as it could/should be. Trackpad does some odd sh** once in a while. Thought I would take advantage of the extended holiday return period to try it once more.

4 - Literally came with a huge gash on the box and a large dent on the MBP itself.

At least your #4 sounds like it was legitimately damaged by the shipper. My unit with the nicks had them underneath the paper between the display and deck and in an area only accessible when the laptop was open. So, in that case, there is absolutely no question it was damaged prior to being boxed. Everything was absolutely pristine up to the point of opening the lid and removing the paper.

I've now got a 4th in progress. My 3rd came today and literally had a hair (or a carpet fiber or something) stuck in one of the keys (I couldn't pull it out), and a fingerprint on the Touch ID sensor. Considering how fragile we know these key mechanisms are, I'm not going to risk pulling the key off and damaging it; I'd rather just do another exchange. It's incredibly sloppy. Somewhat wobbly Touch ID sensor too, but I'd have been willing to ignore that if everything else was good, and some odd substance on one of the speaker grills, but I think I just got that off.

So for me:

#1 - scratch on the case

#2 - defective fan, same as this user's video

#3 - hair stuck in a key that we all know can be rendered nonfunctional by a piece of dust

That's not counting the refurb I ordered before this that came with some pretty bad scuffs on the case (maybe not visible in the refurbishing shop's lighting, but very visible in my room lighting and at the Apple Store where I returned it). The 3 above are all new machines. I thought I'd be less likely to have such issues with new machines, but apparently not. And even more annoyingly, this is a BTO that has to be manufactured and shipped from China each time, so it can take awhile (hopefully quicker now that the holidays are over).

Unit #4 had several areas that appeared as smudges but wiped off with a bit of cleaner and elbow grease, but seriously wtf.

I've seen this too.

My 2018 i7 Vega 20 looks and works fine, but I admit I was kind of dreading that it would have defects out-of-the-box.

Gone are the days that I would be almost 100% confident that my new Apple devices would have a perfect fit and finish.

That totally sucks for you guys! I've had a couple issues this year with getting mine -

Started in May purchased from Best Buy:
2017 Space Grey MBP 13 TB i5/512/8 - Returned 1st 1 due to loose USB-C ports on left, replacement was perfect. (Mine)
2017 Silver MBP 13 TB i5/256/8 - Perfect (Wife's), returned cause she wanted the nTB (o_O)
2017 Silver MBP 13 nTB i5/256/8 - Perfect (Wife's exchange), returned cause she would rather stick with Windows (WTF)
Returned my 2017 when the 2018 was announced. 1st 1 had loose USB-C ports. Exchange was perfect.
Returned my 2018 and bought the 2018 15 2.6/512/16/560x (Got a great price and thought I needed the additional power). 1st 1 had battery issues, runaway fans, and had 5-6 KP within 2 days. Exchange was perfect.
Bought wife 2018 MBA i5/256/8 gold. Great machine for her use. Bright vivid display! Had issues with powering on. Reset PRAM, SMC, reinstalled OS per Apple request, same. Exchanged 4 times but all 4 exchanges had very dim and dull displays compared to the original. Gave up. Bought 2018 MBP i5/256/8 Silver for her instead. Perfect. She's happy.
Sold my 2018 MBP 15 2.6/512/16/560x (wasn't utilizing it fully and the extra bulk just didn't make sense).
Purchased 2018 MBP 13 i5/512/16 Space Grey from B&H on sale during Christmas. Device is perfect.

Its a shame we have to go through so much for such expensive laptops. I don't think I ever had to go through so much with Window's laptops in the past.

Cowboy, after 4 returns, I suggest you start looking for some other manufacturer's laptop and "ride for that brand" instead... (sigh)...

Especially since what does this really mean long-term for the laptop even if you get one that’s OK right now?

That is always the worry. Will the keyboard program be extended to the 2018 models? Based on reports of issues we can guess it might be, but we have no guarantee. Will the T2 issue ever be fixed? Maybe? Maybe not until a next-gen debut of a T3. Staingate apparently hasn't been 100% resolved. Speaker crackle, display flicker, and blue discoloration reported among other issues. What are the odds of trouble-free use over 1 year? 2? 3? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They don't seem like they are built for the long haul, do they?

Got any pics of #2? kinda wanna see a MBP with white glass haha

Apple quality control is insanely bad. At minimum, if you get an expensive BTO they should go through more stringent quality control.

Wow. BridgeOS crashes, crackling speakers, dings and scratches all over new units, loose keys. I guess my BTO 2018 model is a unicorn. Hopefully it lasts me at least 7 years like my 2011 17" MB Pro did, minus warranty video card issues.

Having recently sold my 2011 17" MBP (Sep. '18) after years of trouble-free operation, I am definitely not holding any hope that the new ones will last as long.
