That is a very different thing and has nothing to do with Apple per se. Those are stock integrated GPUs made by Nvidia — and they were integrated into the chipset, not onto the CPU package.

And this is exactly what I'm talking about. AMD has announced integrated Vega GPUs, and since their own mobile CPUs already come with similar iGPUs, the only possible target market are ultrabooks with Intel CPUs. So why exactly shouldn't Apple be able to implement these?

Because the integrated Vega comes integrated with the CPU and the logic, or am I mistaken here? Probably not something you can just take out and plug into a different platform.

I do hope that Apple is working together with AMD and Intel to create some sort of custom config, would be great for us...

No, I'm not talking about the chip which is integrated into AMD's CPUs. I'm talking about the chips AMD teased which are separate and sold without a CPU. They're not yet on sale, but it wouldn't be the first time Apple got a chip from AMD first.

And where do you think they are supposed to get space for it? The very reason why 13" doesn't have dedicated graphics is because there is no space inside to host it. Look at the teardown pictures of the logic boards of 13" and 15" models and notice how much space the GPU package (don't forget the VRAM!) takes. There is a very good reason why 13" laptops don't ship with dedicated GPUs. And if they do, they are either the size of 15" or use additional depth (like SurfaceBooks which have two separate assemblies, both the thickness of a MBP).

Intel managed to get this down substantially since they have the interconnect tech to put CPU+GPU on the same package. And by using stacked HBM2 which has much higher density than normal VRAM.

Ok, sorry for the confusion. Can you link me to this teased product? I can't find anything like that. All I am aware of is mobile Vega (which is a separate "dedicated" GPU) and on-die Vega supplied with Ryzen.

P.S. AFAIK, mainboard-integrated GPUs died the moment the memory controller moved onto the CPU die. The defining property of the integrated graphics is that it shares RAM with the CPU, and it can't do it if it can't access the same memory controller.

Hmm, can't seem to find the link now, I'll look if I saved it somewhere. But from what I remember it was somewhat similar to their integrated Vega 8, only as a separate on-board solution.

You are certainly right about the problems with the memory controller. When memory serves me right, that even delayed Apple's use of Core i-chips until Intel with it's HD3000 finally had an iGPU Apple was okay with. I don't think it's impossible to work around this, but we'll see.

AMD's Navi und NVidia's Turing GPU architectures are almost ready for prime time too. Maybe we'll see a surprise. I sure hope so anyway.

"Onboard" would be the correct terminology here I guess.

I'm not saying I'd prefer such a solution, that was just one alternative to present to the people who argued that Apple will never release a 13" MacBook Pro when no Intel chips with GT3e graphics are available. I don't think that's the case.

Obviously I also believe there will be a 28W 8th gen quad-core Intel chip with GT3e graphics (why should they leave that field to AMD?), and when that's the case, Apple most probably will be going for that.

Yeah I need to buy some popcorn next time I am at the store.. The disappointment threads are going to be legendarily entertaining... Well that's my guess but time will tell. :D
