I bought a new iPad and activated it on September 10th. Today I received the iOS7 update but was not prompted to download the iWork suite for free. I tried looking at these apps in the App Store to see if they would show up as being free and they don't. So how do I get the promised free iWork suite since I activated a new device after September 1st?

Apple specifically stated that any new iOS7 capable device (not just phones) activated after September 1 is eligible for the free iWork suite. The question is not whether I am eligible (which I am) but how to acquire the suite.

I have a new iPhone 5S that I purchased and activated on 9/20/13, but the app store on my new 5S says that the iWork apps are $9.99 each. I'm assuming that the app store will recognize my new device when I tap "Buy Now", but I'm reluctant until I see the word "free" there.

Close out of the App Store, kill it in task manager, then reboot.

Should work correctly then.

Once purchased with a new device is it available to download to older devices on the same account?

Don't click. :) They will show up as Free when they are free.

^Try This^

If that doesn't work, give your iPad a power cycle.

On Friday I figured that I would do a restore on my iPhone 5 and see if I could get it for free. Sure enough, when the restore finished I opened the App Store and a message appeared asking if I wanted to download the iWork apps. Not sure if it matters but I chose to set it up as a new phone, not restore from backup.

I bought my son a refurb touch on Sept 12.
I got all the apps.
Using them now on all devices.

I purchased a 5s and during my set-up I did not have the automatic option to download the iWork/iLife suite (I did a restore from my old phone). However, I was able to download the apps from the App Store for free and then push the apps to my iPad mini without issue.
