OK, so how about this one? My refurb 60gb iPod video gen 5 is supposed to be on its way to me today and hopefully in my hands by this evening. I have heard the the latest update for iPod has worked great for some and terribly for others. Should I try to update it right away or wait a bit? I assume if the update kills it for some reason my warranty should cover it.

I updated my 5G iPod Video the moment the software update was available - haven't noticed any problems so far. And I'm happy to have the brightness control (haven't checked out gapless yet). It'd be nice to have the search feature too.

Well, I got the iPod that I mentioned in my earlier posting (above). Wouldn't you know that I would have problems with my update of the iPod to version 1.2? I have that documented in another thread, and it is fixed now with the help of some great Applecare techs. Just wondering, how is it that you make this "floating letter" thing work when looking at your album list? Not sure that this is all that important to me at this early stage, but I have not seen it yet and wondering how to make it show up. Guess it could be pretty useful at some point in the future when there is alot more stuff on the 60GB.

Oh I really hope you guys can figure this out. My little brother just got a new 5th gen iPod with the search feature but I'm still stuck with the old one. I want the search feature so badly, but not because my brother has it. Just because I have a lot of songs and it'd be great to be able to more easily get to my media. :apple:

Apple would have to upgrade the firmware. There were no compelling reasons to upgrade from the first version of the 5th gen to the second; they are essentially the same thing, except for a somewhat brighter display on both models and marginally longer battery life on the 80GB model. So the almost 18-month-old firmware update for the first version did not contain the search function. It's doubtful they'll ever add it to the first version, although it is possible they'll throw it into a firmware update for the 5th gen when the 6th gen is released. Short answer: Don't wait under water.

And also don't bump year-old posts asking for year-old features to be added to your years-old iPod. If Apple were going to offer you this, they'd have done it last year, the first time we had this discussion. :p

I live with the fact that my iPod 3G doesn't have the features my Nano 2G does. I think you can live also. ;)

I didn't bump it, the guy I answered did, so don't quote me when you take it upon yourself to chastise people for using these forums as they are to be used: as a resource for owners of Apple products. Rather you should be congratulating this new poster for doing a search first before starting a new topic that's covered by an old thread.

And you can live without an iPod, period. People managed to survive in the days of radio. Before, even.
