No use to you but for us Brits the best bet is duty free when leaving the country. My friend is getting me a iPodTouch on his way to Maldives this Monday.

Saves 17.5 % VAT. Thats the great thing about high taxes, feels so much better when you get away without paying them. :p

yes the dixons at heathrow sells ipods and macbooks tax free.

Delaware...

What would the gas cost to get to Delaware? And they have a lot of tolls.

If you don't live in a state without sales tax and purchase from Amazon or another store that doesn't charge you sales tax because they don't operate in your state, then you are required to remit the sales tax yourself. Of course, usually people don't and most of the time you won't get caught if you don't, but it is technically illegal not to.

jW

You don't have to worry too much, unless you live in California.

Which is going through great lengths to collect taxes normally ignored (aka, scanning credit card databases and comparing them to tax returns), and I think they announced years ago that they were going to get serious with use taxes.

Seems they technically "needed" to be collected, but weren't on the main state tax form until 2003. Ooops, who is going to hunt down the Use Tax Form and file it.

Amazon cleraly states there is going to be a delay if you choose Super-saver shipping. You can always pay a small fee and have them ship 3-5 business days.

ok? That doesnt make it right, its like a bait and switch scam, they get people to buy the product because of "free shipping" and then at the last step of ordering they show some completely artificial processing delay for the free shipping option and try to get you to buy paid shipping. Theres no reason they cant give free shipping for little things that cost 400 bucks, everyone else does, Amazon is the only store Ive ever seen that has such a bizarre shipping scam. Amazon doesnt even have cheap shipping either, a company as large as them must get the best possible deals from UPS and FedEx, yet none of that makes its way to the customer. You are much better off ordering from other online retailers.

believe it or not, it used to be 15% last year. You americans have it sooooo good.

Come to the province of Ontario in Canada. Not only will you have the privilege of paying 14% tax, but you'll be able to savour some of the finest poutine outside of Quebec while standing in line for your MacBook.

why does everyone say Amazon has no sales tax??
My dad always buys stuff of there, and he is always charged tax... including a camera he bought for me (I paid him back, he showed me receipt and there was sales tax)

Sales taxes in the United States are assessed by every state except Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Hawaii has a similar tax although it is charged to businesses instead of consumers. [from wikipedia]

Technically, all sales taxes in the US are charged on businesses, not on consumers. The reason we see "sales tax" on a receipt is because the business wants to show you that they're charging you extra for it. Some companies don't do this; they roll the sales tax into their price. Starbucks (for all the terrible coffee) does this. If you live in a state with sales tax, you'll notice that Starbucks doesn't write/print it on the receipt; that's because it's been calculated into the price. European companies do this as a standard, hence the reason why the UK Apple Store has two prices; you'll notice that one says "without VAT."

However, it seems unlikely the OP lives in those states.
In fact he said he lives in Texas;)

PowerMax, Mac Connection, Small Dog, Other World Computing. Google for links.

What state are you in? Makes a difference.
Agreed. I don't think Mac Connection has a Texas store, so I'll recommend them.

It could be that Amazon has a physical presence in California. Or they might be covering their bases.
