I would like to grab one of the previous mbps for my personal computer (bootcamp and compatibility with linux stuff via macports, AVX instructions etc., consistency with my wife's intel mac and my work intel mac). Been busy recently and dropped the ball getting one before the M1s. I was wondering where I can order an i9 16 inch with 32 or 64 gb ram, 2tb or 4tb hd, 5600M? They are not available at Best Buy, B&H, etc. Please help. Many thanks in advance.

The only retailers I have known to stock BTO MBP's are B&H and maybe Adorama. And I don't think any retailers can order a BTO from Apple now that the new M1's are available. Or settle for the 5500 which B&H does have available.

I traded in my 16" MacBook Pro with 5600m (i9, 32gb, 2TB). The guy at the Apple Store was in awe at how new it looked as it was in pristine condition. No visible wear anywhere on the machine. He said that he wished he could buy it from Apple. So not sure if trade-ins are placed in the 'refurbished' lot at Apple, but if you get mine, you're getting a brand new looking machine that was babied. ;)

A week from now you'll find a lot of them on eBay.

I did Apple's online trade-in quote for mine, and the price was ridiculously low, almost as if the 5600m didn't matter.

I just grabbed one from my Apple store. They still have them. Got the 16” i9/32gb/2tb/5600m. That config is stocked at the store. I think you’re gonna find that the 5600m bests the top of the line M1 Max. At least that’s what their chart shows.

Huh?? Where do you see a chart showing the 5600M topping the M1 Max? No such chart exists. They give direct comparisons of the 5600M vs. M1 Max on the website and the M1 Max is 2-5x faster.

That being said, I'm glad to hear you say that 32GB / 2TB is a configuration of the last-gen 16" stocked in stores. Maybe that means they'll stock the same config for the new one on Tuesday and I can snag one quicker than my online order would've arrived.

Not sure why you think that. M1 Max is miles faster.

They have the chart on their website. Go check it out and report back. I think you’re gonna find that the new MacBooks were just a little over hyped. This is from a good source.

Testing conducted by Apple in September 2021 using preproduction 14-inch MacBook Pro systems with Apple M1 Max, 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU and 64GB of RAM, and preproduction 14-inch MacBook Pro systems with Apple M1 Pro, 10-core CPU, 16-core GPU and 32GB of RAM, both configured with 8TB SSD, as well as production 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7–based 13-inch MacBook Pro systems with Intel Iris Plus Graphics, 32GB of RAM and 4TB SSD. Adobe Photoshop 22.5.0 tested using the following filters and functions: render tree, lens flare, oil paint, generate UVs, and unify scene for 3D printing. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of MacBook Pro.

Taken directly from the Apple website. This is the fine print for the infographic showing clear as day that the M1 Max smokes the 5600M. So I have no idea what you are talking about. You need to upgrade your good source to a great source maybe.

The absolute worst example had a 1.9x uplift from the 5600M (Davinci Resolve Studio). More typically it was 4x for other professional GPU workloads.

The M1 Max is supposed to be 60% faster than the 5600M.
However, if the application isn't M1 native, then the performance should be pretty close because of the hit from Rosetta 2.
If it's one the games that doesn't work on the M1 Max, then of course 5600M is the way to go :)

If it's a 32 bit game, then you're out of luck with a recent version of macOS. (I'll never excuse apple for not being able to play Half-Life 2 on a mac anymore, haha. Notches, touch bars, lack of ports, none of that is as bad as dropping 32 bit support. I'd pay $500 just to have that put that back in.).
