So, I just got a new job out of the blue (good news!) and one thing they'd prefer is that I have my own computer... which despite all the techy crap around here, I actually don't! So they're buying me one of my choosing or contributing to one I keep (picking the latter!), and I'd really like that to be one of the new iMacs.

Anyway... I know Apple appears to be backed up until late June on most of these... I don't trust B&H just because they get backordered on preorders of Apple stuff there and I know I'm late to this game.

Is anywhere else going to be selling this? Would I be best off going to the Apple Store on the 21st in person?

Yes, Apple has a different stock for AppleStores and online stores, so you will be much better off if you just visit a local AppleStore and get an iMac on May 21st.

As stated above, select colors in the base SKUs should be available in store. They’ll probably have a 16GB/1TB model as well, since they do with the other M1 machines. You’ll have to wait until next week to know for sure.

I agree with everyone else the stores will have them maybe not in your first choice for color but I am sure they will have them.

This is very helpful, thank you! Glad to hear stores will presumably have them on that date, and luckily I'll have the flexibility to run out early.

if you want to upgrade the ram to 16 you might have to order it online if this is a machine u want to hold on to for years and years to come

Congrats on the job!
If you are in the USA:

And you want the base iMac (which I am am getting in 6 days direct from Apple) - go to a Best Buy store after 5/21 - as they will stock the base models.

Also, if you happen to be a Costco member, they are offering it a discount and their warranty is free for 2 years. And if you have Citi Costco Visa, they will double the warranty at no cost to 4 years. That alone saves you over $300 in AppleCare.

I also have purchased from B&H in the past (16" MBP) and they are good - they will update you on your order status and won't charge your card until it ships (free). I use their Payboo card to save on tax ($150 here in CA) then pay off the card within 30 days otherwise their 30% interest rate will offset any savings.

Is the company going to require that any particular software be used?
If so, is it "known-good" with the m-series Macs...?

Besides the Apple Store. Check Microcenter and Best Buy. They may have them in stock. Microcenter sometimes offers a discount on new Macs.
