I'll be in Moscow, Russia on Monday but I would like to take a train to one of the countries that sell unlocked iPhones. Anyone have an idea of which country would be my best bet? From what I gather my choices are France, Belgium, and Switzerland, is that correct?

Edit: Oh yeah, and if anyone knows of a good carrier in Russia I'd sure like to know.

You're going to take the train from Moscow to France or Belgium? That's going to take days! And be pretty expensive as well I guess. And the iPhone is sold out pretty much everywhere anyway. Seems like a pretty insane plan to me, but if you want to go through with it I know there is a direct train between Moscow and Brussels, I see it arrive in the Brussels-South train station pretty regularly.

Well I'll have two weeks in Russia and I figure I might as wel see other bits of europe while I'm at it since I've never been. How is the stock in Brussels? Is there a way for me to check stock?

Pay and go in uk on 02

I wanted to start a whole new thread to ONLY discuss, where you can get unlocked (subscription-free, legal, new, non sim-locked etc. etc.) 3G iPhone.

I live in Finland, and we do have iPhone 3G by Sonera, but they have wack contracts with limited data (largest contract is 1000mb, but at the price it's just ridiculous, 142$/month, check it out, translated by google: iPhone - Sonera - Pricing)

SO I want to buy an UNLOCKED iPhone, because I already have a nice contract with another carrier, about 15$/month and unlimited data. I read that belgium's carrier Mobistar sells them, but they're priced way too high.

So what I'd want you to do is state FACTS which you can prove by linking to CARRIER websites, of subscription-free iPhone 3G's sold in different countries. I'm obviously interested only in the iPhones sold in the European Union (EU), but some other people might be interested in the iPhones of other continents, such as Australia, i hear they have those too.

My 2 cents:

1) http://iphone3g.mobistar.be/nl/iphone3g.cfm# EDIT: a translated version by google: Mobistar - iPhone 3G
1.1) iPhone black 8gb 525€ (834$)
1.2) iPhone white 16gb 615€ (977$)
1.3) EDIT: ONLY USABLE WITH BELGIAN SIM-CARD

As far as i know Optus (AUS) is the only carrier offering to legitimately unlock iphones with no contract whatsoever. Buying the phone outright will still be locked to whatever sim you first put into the phone, A$809 (8GB) A$919 (16gb). for A$860 and A$960 respectively i would purchase and ship one for you

Unlocked IPhone

France

The phone is locked to Orange France

To Unlock it you need to purchase a 75euro topup card

Once the account has been credited with the 75euros plus 25 euros bonus you need to ask customer services to unlock the handset this is done electronically via Itunes after around 7 days (you need to insert a non accepted sim card into the phone) If you can wait six months after activation it will be done free

You pay 509 euros for the phone plus 75 euros to unlock it which totals 584 euros plus a load of hassle and if you don't speak French your stuffed!

Remember that when you buy the phone you supply and address to the store, you need to register the same address via Itunes for the unlock to work also you may need a french credit/debit card for the itunes registration

Facing all this when I was in Lille 3 weeks ago and NO France Telecom shops having any stock I browsed on mobistar's website and noticed there was a store in Tournai (Belgium) approximately 30 minutes away by train from Lille Flandres

After phoning the store and checking that they had stock in (20) I travelled up their and picked one up the train fare was about 15 euros

I needed my passport and I paid by credit card (525 euros)

The phone was unbricked before I left the store

I'm now an owner of an unlocked 3G IPhone 8GB

NB The guarantee is 2 years

I have an old 2G Iphone and everytime the phone is restored it states congratulations your iphone is now unlocked

With the Beigique IPhone its unlocked OTB

For 80 or 150 AUD they unlock them. Too bad I see this just after I paid 1230 for one.

Just to make sure, could someone please confrm that if I purchased the iPhone through the Vodafone NZ site I wouldn't have to do anything to unlock it.

Edit: Nevermind, at check out they force you to choose a region in NZ I guess..
