I found that Coconut Battery will give the date of manufacture, even on "non-laptops" (such as the Mini I'm using now).
Is there a portion of the serial number that indicates the country of origin?

You'll note it says "macbook".
Not sure whether the same info applies to other Mac products.
However, my Mini's serial starts with "C0", which would indicate "Tech Com" above...
