Where'd my desktop applications go?

I'm not sure what's going on with my MAC, but recently every time I turn my MAC on, my desktop icons (whatever you call them) are gone except for the blue finder one, keynote, and the trash can. I then have to click on the finder one to put the ones I use back on....only for them to disappear again when I shut my computer down.

If you right mouse on them when open, is Keep in Dock selected?
