John Gruber hasn't posted anything new on his site or socials since September 10. Does anyone else find this extremely odd?

This time of year has to be his Super Bowl when it comes to Daring Fireball site traffic. If I were a sponsor who paid for iPhone announce/release week, I'd be pissed that there's nothing new. No "thoughts and observations from the iPhone event." No reviews of the new products. Nada.

I was literally thinking of posting something about this myself last night.. it’s definitely odd.

I wondered if his interest/passion for Apple had started to wane, ever since they declined his annual post-wwdc talk show.

It is an unusual time to be taking a break from publishing on his site. I'm sure the new iPhone launch fortnight is the biggest in terms of news and traffic.

Especially because the reason was that he spoke candidly and kindly about a severe lapse of judgement in Apple's management. Apple should have thanked him for calling them out, not iced him out

If I were him, I'd probably have something of a crisis because he built his career on Apple and did that because he was passionate about Apple's high quality hardware and software. These days, that's failing (especially the software) and he's getting punished for speaking the truth about it.

So now he has to choose: either get a new career, fall in line behind the smiling Apple mouthpieces, or try the riskiest move of all: stay in the Apple lane, but become a critic of what they've become

I lost a lot of respect for Apple (that had already been severely affected by Tim Cook's bending over backward to expand their reach in China at the cost of ~ P R I V A C Y ~) because of how they treated Gruber.

If you can't take criticism, you're a little bitch. That goes for corporations, politicians, and regular degular people.

Used to enjoy his original takes. Then the site devolved into parroting political talking points that you can find pretty much anywhere else on the internet. Been several years since I tried reading white text on a gray background.
Yup got tired of his ranting. The occasional willingness to speak openly about Apple was nice as you generally knew those were real actual problems, but he was always deep in Apple's pocket and not objective in general.

But what can I say, blogs seem to be dead in general. A very harsh adapt (to YouTube) or die reality.

Or... continue doing what he's been doing for decades. It's a false dichotomy to suggest the only two options are mouthpiece or critic.

Ahh... So when you agree with him, it was real and open. But when you don't agree with him it was payola. That's a rational argument to you?

It's funny that I noticed it was weird how long he had been gone about an hour ago and then I saw this thread.

I wonder occasionally if that post is what did it or if it was this... (Specifically the last paragraph.) Maybe it was a bit of both. Regardless of your opinion on the matter it seems hard to attack someone so directly as an individual and remain chummy.

You're responding to some narrative in your head that isn't what I wrote.

It was almost certainly that last line.

Gruber had critiqued Apple before (2014 as a notable time) and been fine. He made it personal with his homophobic attack on Tim there, and then tried to pretend like he hadn't done anything wrong.

My guess would be he doesn't have a review because Apple didn't send him anything, and he's still coping with that fact. I think he thought this would blow over by now.

Maybe he could try an honest public apology.
