He doesn’t have the Apple contacts he used to, and he’s been posting a lot less over the last couple of years. How old is he now? He might just be slowly ramping down.

I don’t recall why Apple stopped sending him stuff.. but, I look forward to his comments each year, when available.
Well, could it be because he was highly critical of Apple's AI efforts when Apple announced they delayed it and also when Apple stopped sending executives to his Talk Show program at WWDC this year?

Mid 50s. he’s got a kid in college.

Up until the 9/10 Apple event he’d been posting just as much as usual. And if was backing off on tech posts he had definitely ramped up his political posts.

I lost a lot of respect for Apple (that had already been severely affected by Tim Cook's bending over backward to expand their reach in China at the cost of ~ P R I V A C Y ~) because of how they treated Gruber.

If you can't take criticism, you're a little bitch. That goes for corporations, politicians, and regular degular people.
Me too. And with great power comes great responsibility. So Apple should be *more* open to criticism, not less

Or... continue doing what he's been doing for decades. It's a false dichotomy to suggest the only two options are mouthpiece or critic.
You missed my point: Apple purposely punished him for criticizing them. He lost access to them because he spoke the truth about their false advertising.

If they did that to me, it would completely change my view of them. The fact that they did it to him changed my view of them.

It was petulant and not befitting of a billion dollar company with so much power

I wonder occasionally if that post is what did it or if it was this... (Specifically the last paragraph.) Maybe it was a bit of both. Regardless of your opinion on the matter it seems hard to attack someone so directly as an individual and remain chummy.
Hmm either way he was speaking truth

I’ve read Daring Fireball for many years, but the politics has had me checking it less and less often. I don’t even disagree with the bulk of what he says, I just don’t go to his blog for politics, especially when he doesn’t really have any insight to offer on the topic.

In terms of Apple not giving him special treatment, if he’s surprised to be neglected after biting the hand that feeds him, he’s foolish.

He posted. Must have gotten word about this thread. Now everyone else can back off their "Apple must have blackballed him high horse."

Hello dear readers. Daring Fireball has been silent for the last week. I realize how unusual it is for the site to go un-updated any week of the year, let alone this particular week of the year. I’m so sorry about that, and also sorry about not being able to write this note to you sooner.

I have been dealing with — and working through — a very personal situation for the past week. It’s OK. I’m going to be OK. But it has kept me offline for some time. Given the one-man nature of this site, that has meant that nothing has been published.

I look forward to getting back to writing very soon. I can feel it: I will be back soon. I’m itching to go. I mean, jiminy, it’s new iPhones week. But it’ll be a few more days before I get those reviews out. In the meantime, I so profoundly appreciate your patience and understanding.

Your faithful correspondent,
John Gruber

He has now officially posted acknowledging that he has been gone for a while. Looks like it was a personal issue... Hope he and his family are ok.
See guys? Sometimes, baseless accusations are not warranted and the best course of action is to just be patient and let the situation pan out and in this case, Gruber answered back.

There was no need for all of the points that were being made in this thread.

Most of the points here about Gruber’s souring relationship with Apple and fading relevance are still valid. And definitely pertinent to this community given Gruber’s long held, but now debatable, status as king of Apple bloggers.

But yes they are apparently not the direct cause of his silence this week.

Daring Fireball remains the best-written, most objective blog about Apple. Gruber’s post about Apple’s problems with AI was correct and courageous. It cost him, at least temporarily, his relationship with senior leadership at the wealthiest company in the world. That proves Gruber’s intellectual honesty and proves his blog’s objectivity and value. I can’t wait to read his review of the iPhones 17.

No, he’s got principles and guts. You could learn a thing or two from him

It’s better to speak the truth and get punished than lie to yourself and be a lapdog for the powerful
I never said he shouldn't have spoken his mind, I just said he would be a fool to not expect consequences. Nice on deciding you have a read on a stranger's moral compass from a single forum post, though.
