and it'll probably be miniDisplayPort only!!!:eek::eek:

That's what I said ^^^

and that's why i'm purchasing the 4870 for my 2008 Mac Pro so that I can use the LED

Okay think before you do this. The cable on the back of the LED is only 44 inches long. There is not currently an extension cable, see my post above. There have been a plenty of complaints about it to Apple, they don't seem to care.

 I see a laptop upgrade!

Maybe I've been seated in the "OLED will never pan out for the next few years" mentality all this time. Something priced more affordably would be a godsend, but I don't think I'd pick up one too fast... It'd probably still be out of my price bracket, no matter the justification.

I also like how it was posted on 4/20 :D

If anyone's considering the NEC 3090, or the Spectraview 3090 variant (in Europe only), then I can whole-heartedly recommend it! I ordered mine yesterday afternoon (Monday) and it arrived before 7am this morning. Of course, I had to unpack it, despite having to go to work.

In short, it is stunning. And huge. I had to take the stand off to get it upstairs (it weighs something in the region of 20kg).

I understand that the cable on the 24-inch is a bit short and those 24-inch are first gen LED that was made for Apple's laptops but i'm not purchasing the 24-inch, I'm basically waiting for desktop version of the LED cinema when Apple release the 30-inch and that's why i want the 4870, but there's a guy on Youtube have dual 24-inch LED Cinema Displays hook up to his Mac Pro and the Mac is on the floor, check the video yourself

Yeah that is the only way you could do it have the Pro in the middle (of the displays), if you want it on the floor.

Is there any reason why this Displayport Female --> Male wouldn't work:

BTW - How can I hook two Apple 24" Cinema Displays up to a Mac Pro with only one ATi HD4870?

KB

Apple uses mini-display port which is a different connector from the standard display port you linked to.

As for two LED ACD's, that can only be done with two graphics cards at the moment. (Either dual GT120's or a GT120 and a 4870).

Apple ACD, Dell 3008 or Sell the house and buy an NEC 3090?

The choice of 30 inch monitors in the UK at the moment is severely limited. As a student I get a discount on an Apple so prices to me are something like

Apple ACD £1025
Dell 3008 varies with offers etc but at present around £1100
NEC 3090 varies but from overclockers around £1680 (allowing for postage)

Hazro seemed to have dropped out the market (though they did send me an e-mail saying that they will be re-entering it soon). Samsung 305Ts don't seem to be readily available (at least from suppliers that I trust) though they must be around as the university where I'm studying keeps acquiring them. Eizo etc are stratospheric in pricing.

The Dell has had very mixed reviews but would allow me to plug things like my tv set-top box (which I plug into my 21inch monitor for PIP at present) and my pc as well as Mac and allow blue ray (so I could play my one blue ray sampler disk!).

Apple has had good reviews, most recently in Tom's hardware where it was favourably compared to the Dell. But it is five years old or more so most of the reviews are similarly out-of-date (what looked good when the ACD came out may have been superseded by others now).

After that long pre-amble my question is - to those who say the Dell is better than the Apple is this based on picture quality, or on other things like connectivity, HDMI, vertical screen adjustment etc?

Nec 3090

I received my NEC LCD3090 and set it up over the weekend with my shiny new Mac Pro Quad 2.93.

I bought it from techforless.com (via Amazon) $1275, incl shipping. Factory refurbished, 1yr NEC warranty.

NEC put the wrong cable in my box (VGA instead of DVI), so I went and bought one from Radio Shack. NEC would have sent me one for free, but I didn't want to wait ....:)

Other than that - spectacular monitor!!!

Guys what do you think about samsung 305T+ as 30" monitor for Mac Pro??? Have anyone used that monitor?

To the OP, I understand that color graphics are great on your monitor. How is the text rendering?

I just bought a Dell 3008 refurbished for $1099 plus tax. It has a couple of dead pixels that woke up with one days use. I'm very happy with it. I wish I could afford two of them, but to tell the truth, I am happy with just one. I set up my smaller Dell 24" with 1920x1200 resolution and it did not look right next to the Monster Dell.

How did you hook it up? MiniDisplayPort or DVI?
Will the Dell 3008 work hooked up to a one year old MBP DVI? I read something about dual lin DVI on that screen...
And how about a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adaptor, so I can hook it up to a new Mac Mini without using up any of the DVI ports on the screen??

Go with Dell all the way. The 3007WFC-HC is a better monitor than Apple 30'' and is cheaper. Also more warranty. I'm really happy with my 3007WFC (3 years old now).

erm, the 3007 is most definitely not better than the apple 30. Better pricewise sure but thats it.

I run 2 x 30" screens and I've been through 4 x 3007's - none of them held consistent colours, always needed to be recalibrated *very* frequently. You could never get the 2 displays to match i.e. drag an image between the 2 and it would change noticeably.

On the other hand the 2 x apple 30's were near identical out of the box, and barely need recalibration. Dragging an image between them is perfect.

I have not used a 3008 though or the new nec. Just saying the 3007 is better is just not true.
