I'm trying to decide on an icon to use for an app I'm about to submit to the App Store and I'd like to get some opinions on which one's nicer. I'm kind of leaning towards the first one because I think I like the contrast of the different colors (and I think it might stand out better).

Here are the two I've narrowed it down to:

Icon 1:

Icon 2:
iconlarge.png

I was thinking of using one as a free version icon and another as a paid version icon if I can't decide.

Thanks for your help.

well whats it for

It's for an alarm clock app with weather information and customizable photo backgrounds (it's going to be called Nightstand Central and released as a free update to my "Nightstand Weather Clock" app).

It doesn't make sense to have it say 7:45am and it be night time. So I'm gonna go with icon 1.

I'd go with the second one, just make sure you change the AM to PM because its a bit odd. Definitely the second one though, it's uber sexy.

You should try to resize them to iPhone size to see which looks nicer.
The first has less details and could look better at smaller sizes.

If it's possible, show us those at the size we'd see them on our iDevices, the 2nd one looks great, but might be too small to see the detail at iPhone size.

I think the first one looks better - but yes, post them both at a smaller size so we can get more of an idea. Some of the detail in the second one may be lost at smaller sizes.

#1 Stands out more
#2 Flat out looks better

I agree. I ended up making my decision. Icon 1 will be used for the upcoming Nightstand Central Free version update and Icon 2 will be used in version 3.0 of Nightstand Central (full version).

Thanks for sharing your opinions!

Have you checked out these icons when they'll be at their springboard sizes? When they're that much smaller, you'll probably lose much of the detail.
