I currently have a Canon M50, and am looking for a more advanced replacement in the next few months. The Canon app is excellent for geotagging, it has always been rock solid and after a recent update I don’t even have to open the app before I start shooting. I really like that. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a good upgrade option for me within what Canon makes.

In general I’m looking for: >= 30MP, Easy geotagging, Switchable lens, Water resistant, USB-C, ~$2000 (less if possible)

I was looking at the Fujifilm X-T5 but it seems like you have to open the app first, and even then it doesn’t work very well. (Allegedly) Fujifilm was the best option I found so far for those features in the ~$2000 price point, and even less without water resistance with the X-T50.

On the Nikon side, you could get one of the GP-1a modules for ~$100 I think and plug it into various cameras. It will hit the battery a bit, but you do not require an app at all. It is no longer made, so you are looking at tracking down a used one.

Pentax offered something similar. Maybe Canon as well.

The Z9 Geo-tags internally, but at a higher price point than you want.

It's really a shame, since almost all the Canon DSLRs had built-in GPS. I was really hoping they'd bring it back for the R5 Mark II since the R3 has it, but it looks like Canon and Nikon have decided only the larger bodies get it (Z9, R3, R1).

Right now I typically just use a GPS watch, and as long as the time on the camera is correct Lightroom makes it pretty easy to sync that and geotag all the un-geotagged photos. I'll probably try the Canon app though, I haven't used it in many years at which point it wasn't very reliable. But everything I've read recently seems to say it works great for them!
