I am however wondering if I contacted them, would they replace my normal sim with a microsim, so do I just shut up about it and trim it down myself!

I think they will, although they might charge you for it. You can, if you are careful, cut down your SIM and it will work. There should be some templates on the internet to tell you where to cut.

I looked it up on line as I couldn't remember the exact amount - the plan is actually called Broadband 5GB (so it is 5GB), and the prices is listed as 14.99 with a 6.99 loyalty bonus (although it wasn't loyalty, it was a special deal on quidco in 2008!).

I got 5GB per month for £10 from Vodafone Uk with a SIM ONLY 12 months contract. If you want you can always go to the Vodafone forum and ask for loyalty discounts.

Buy the iPhone PAYG sim for £10 which comes with free data, put it in an iPhone and make a call to set it up, then put it in your iPad and then a few days later your free data will be applied. It gives you unlimited browsing and 500MB a month for video streaming. It works with mobile hotspot too. £10 for 12 months data is much better than any of the iPad-specific deals.

This is exactly what I have done :)

Three terrible in London

A lot of people on here are recommending Three and saying they get great speeds. I would recommend being very careful before committing to Three because they are not consistently reliable and there are huge black spots.

I live and work in central London and I find that their 3G is virtually useless in London. During weekday daytimes I have a full 3G signal displayed on my phone but I am lucky to get 0.05Mbps down and often data doesn't work at all. At the same location around midnight I get 6Mbps down clearly indicating the network is heavily overloaded. I get similar experiences in most of London.

Another problem is when moving you frequently lose connection because there is no 2G backup and there are brief gaps between cells resulting dropped connections or calls (if on iphone). And many buildings get no signal at all including some parts of major stations such as Liverpool street.

After much deliberation I have decided to go with 3 on their £7.50 per month package as I now have a gelaskin I want to leave a sim in there permanently so this looks to be the best deal out there.

Was close with Orange though with their £10 package but their network is not very good for data IMHO

What are your speeds like ?

It's true Three have the best 3G coverage and speeds, as well as the best tariffs, and I've been with them since day one on my original iPad. But, as others have remarked, God help you if you need to call upon their offshore customer service — it is apocalyptically bad.

Best way to get support from 3? Use their twitter support account - @ThreeUKSupport

Somebody in the UK monitors it and they respond pretty quickly.

Some websites are selling prepaid PAYG Three cards with 3 Months & 3GB for around £11. That's under £4 per month. I bough three and I'll be replacing them as I use them (cheaper than topping up which is £10/month for 1GB).

I also recommend testing three with a Payg sim before committing to a contract.

Best signal and speeds but speeds did plummet in peak times for me and I got no signal in a couple of places I visit regularly, one of them wasn't even that rural. For me I just couldn't risk not having coverage to ring or receive calls when out and about.

All tested in the iPhone 4s.

Currently I'm sticking with my old unlimited O2 tariff. Still get fast 3G speeds of around 4-6Mbit/sec even around peak times and so far good but not great coverage. Unless in centre of town it's only about 3 or 4 bars.

Tmobile also good, like three but the capped my data dl speeds at like 750Kb/sec. Don't think thats the case in. all areas.

But then again I'm using an Android phone, which actually allows the use of WiFi hotspot no matter what data plan or carrier you are with.

You can tether, but it isn't necessarily included in your allowance, and your network will be aware that you are tethering.

That was my experience when I was with O2.

It's horses for courses really, you go with what works wherever you are likely to be.

Also, if you find yourself in a position where you absolutely have to use your iPad/iPhone abroad, it's worth noting that Three's EU roaming rates are the least outrageous of all the UK operators (£1.28/MB).

I get on average 12mbit down and 5mbit up on 3 at home.

T-Mobile are notorious for capping speeds and their compression on website graphics is very annoying as well.
