Which do you prefer 12.9" or 10.5"

Hi, I just want to add my experience here. I have a 2014 MacBook Pro 15” which has been used less and less as I mainly use my iPad Pro 9.7 that I got in March last year. I can’t give OS X up just yet, but I would like to pass it on to my son for university in 2 years time - fingers crossed.

I nearly bought the larger iPad last time, but fell for truetone, camera and portability of the 9.7 Pro and I’ve been happy with it. My husband got my Air 2 and he uses it daily.

I have a ‘significant birthday’ in the next few weeks, so I can choose a new iPad. My husband will receive my iPad Pro 9.7 and the Air2 will be passed on to our son to help him with his A-level studies.

I am overstating things and waffling, I know, but I’m British, it’s what we do . . . .

So, I’m looking at a new iPad Pro, 10.5 or 12.9 and I’ve made a few trips to a few stores to check them out with my son in tow to give me his opinion, but also to set things up on the adjacent iPad in store to compare.

It was a journey, it involved John Lewis, Apple Store, McDonalds, and ice-creams. I’ll post my experience in the morning if anyone is interested (or not died of boredom) .

I'm sure you will be happy with whatever you choose 🙂 I hadn't seen the 10.5 in person yet either to be honest. Be interested if it is much different size wise in person

I'm British as well i completely understand don't worry about it 😉 🙂 personally i wouldn't want to give up OSX i find it the best OS, mixed with Apple's Mac hardware i find Mac's to be the best computers on the market.
The iPad Pro is getting very close to replacing laptops for a lot of people including those who do everyday tasks (checking email, browsing the web, online shopping, Youtube, Netflix and so on) and i have found that i can do more on my iPad Pro and will probably be able to do even more than that on the second generation when i pick one up, but i still love to use a Mac.

My money on that as well. For me once you get use to using large screens it's hard to go back. That's why large screen phones have stuck around.

What is scary to me is the speed going from the new 12.9 to the pro 9.7.

The speed is massive and feels slow on the pro 9.7 when it isn't. The new pro motion is stunning when you compare the two. YouTube videos don't do it justice.

What's the best way to see it? I have the 12.9 and if I hadn't heard of ProMotion I probably wouldn't notice any difference. But I guess I need to compare it to the 9.7. Do I just need to open the same website on each and scroll?

Even on the home screen going from the row of apps. Even in apps scrolling up and down it's very noticeable to me.

YouTube videos are 30 fps. Reckon it's not so much the speed but rather how everything looks so smooth and fluid. Kinda like how eight hours is still eight hours except on Fridays when it seems that it's dragging so long and you can't wait to get home and enjoy the weekend. 😛

You were right! A lot of swinging from one to the other, but the 10.5 suits my needs best for now, and I could get the 256GB for less than the 64GB 12.9. My Air 2 was 128GB, usually about half full, but I didn't want to go back down to 64GB as I like not having to worry. I'm on my narrow boat holiday for a week next week so lots of Netflix, iPlayer downloads to go on. 128GB would have been fine though - Damn you Apple! 😡

My 12.9 came early and I must say...love it. It's not better than the 10.5 it's just different. I think they are equal for their intended audience.

If I read more normal sized books I'd keep the 10.
For manuals, magazines, comics and diagrams the 12 is the winner. And maybe it's just me but the sound on the 12 seems richer.

What do you all use your keyboard for? Obiously typing, but what exactly? I keep feeling like I should get one but with a tablet I don't think at the moment I need one just for typing emails. So what are you all typing?? I feel like I am missing out on something haha.

Also, does anyone have the new Logitech slim combo keyboard case? Wondering if it's a good alternative to Apple's version.

Blogging, emails, forums, writing fiction. Once I find a solid screenwriting app (not final draft) that is iPad and Mac compatible I will getting back into that too. Really impressed with the ASK, I am a speed demon on it.

The sound Emanating from the 12.9 iPad Pro is superior over the 10.5. I Believe the iPad Pro 12.9 uses larger speaker drivers and also uses carbon fiber caps over the speakers to help accentuate the sound.

As far as sound and owner of both. Neither is superior, again everything is exactly the same but screen resolution due to 12.9 having a bigger screen. The 12.9 has a fuller sound because the speakers have more space from each other than on the 10.5, giving the sound more space to produce, side by side sound almost identical.

Guess what? I'm sat all happy with my new 10.5 with the esr case that came today. My iPad Pro 9.7 all factory reset to pass on. Hubby walks in with one of those smirks . . .

"I liked the 12.9. I've gone and ordered myself one. It comes Monday. Can you work from home so I don't miss the delivery?"

Well, I said I 'could' work from home, on the condition he let me do some 12.9/10.5 comparisons (for my MacRumors Friends) , and use his Audi TT for the day

Picturing someone laying in bed, holding the 12.9 in portrait, makes me laugh.

I do it all the time but I'm 6'2". It's all relative.

I had the original 12.9 from day one and couldn't be happier about the screen and speed improvements on the new one. Screen alone was reason for me to upgrade to the new one.
But I do still look at the 10.5 and am even thinking about having both but I have also thought what others here have said which is a size between 10.5 and 12.9 would be ideal for me.
The 10.5 with those thin bezels is pretty great.
I also have aging eyes so points to the 12.9 there.
I have two 15" MBP, one issued by work, and one mine and it's connected to my 5k monitor by one cable so I have no qualms about carrying it around and using it instead of an iPad.
I ran iOS 11 a few days ago and the new features are nice but not enough for me to want to work much more on my iPad compared to a MBP. I reinstalled iOS 10 since iOS 11 is of course still pretty buggy.
I'll probably just get a 10.5 as well.

That's a good point and I am in the same exact situation. Food for thought.

I had the keyboard with my last 12.9 but gave it away because I'm ok with just typing on the screen.
I've seen number of reviews that said the Logitech keyboard is too thick and clumsy on the 10.5 but the 12.9 versions fits that iPad much better. You would think Logitech could do a better job designing these by now.
