I'd like to download 10.11.6 for a (future) clean install. (I'm currently having dual boot 10.6.8 / 10.11.6 with the latter based on a 10.11.3 installer)
Which version should I get from https://support.apple.com/en_US/downloads
the 'normal' update or the 'combo' update?

Delete the OS X installer from Applications (if it's there), then go to your purchases tab in the Mac App Store and re-download El Capitan. Once it launches, just cmd-Q the installer window and you have the 10.11.6 installer cached.

You can then build a drive to do a clean install from USB, just need a blank USB drive of 8 GB or more. Create a bootable installer for OS X - Apple Support

In case it's not clear from the post above, it's not possible to do a clean install with any updater downloaded from the support website. You need to follow the process listed above in post #2.

As a safety valve, once I have CMD-Q the install process, I copy the full installer bundle from my /Applications folder to another location, either on the local machine (your Users/username/Downloads folder, for example) or to another machine. I keep that bundle for some time, stored on a backup disk, and I keep every point version for the current version running. Once the current version is finalized (10.11.6 appears to be the final for El Capitan, for example, so once Sierra is released), I will delete the earlier points and keep only the last one. You can always return to an older bundle that is stored and create a USB installer stick from it, if needed.

    Just another quick question:
Can I let it download overnight - I have a slow (1 Mb/s) internte connection - or should I be 'there' when the download finishes to cmd-Q the install process in time?

You can let it download overnight. The installer will not move beyond the first screen without user interaction leaving you to CMD+Q the installer anytime after the download finishes.

    (download took 12 hrs 40 min ...)

Trying to create a bootable installer on a SD card (placed in a USB card reader), but I get this message (in terminal):

    Password:
    Ready to start.
To continue we need to erase the disk at /Volumes/MyVolume.
If you wish to continue type (Y) then press return: Y
Failed to start erase of disk due to error (-9999, 0).
A error occurred erasing the disk.

Is that because I'm trying to do it with a SD card rather than a USB pen drive?
PS: How does that card or drive need to be formatted?

    Any advice much appreciated!

The SD could be the problem. To be honest, I have only ever used a USB thumb drive. I would try the USB drive of at least 8 Gb since it is known to work properly.
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

The createinstallmedia program within the installer does not work on Snow Leopard, if you happen to attempt it from there.

Good to know, thanks - will move it to the El Capitan partition and do it from there.

update: it worked fine on a SD card (on El Capitan); will do another one on a USB drive once I've got a spare one.
