The solution to this is set up the gmail smtp server as the send point. All mail gets forwarded to iCloud, and any email you send is sent through gmail server. It's really easy to set up
Even for replies coming from an iCloud email address?

Yes, anything you send would be sent from the GMAIL SMTP previously set up, regardless of what account the original email was forwarded from.

Do you have the instructions on how to do this, or a link that shows how?

I like it for two reasons: multiple gmail accounts are much easier to work with, and the security code. I am not a big Google apps user but apparently that interface is also better than the Gmail client. You can look at the screenshots on that link to get an idea. I just don't like the Gmail client. For a while it had a big advantage in that Imail G did not allow attachments but now it does.

Check out post 21.

Thanks. I set it up that way and it all works perfectly. I deleted my gmail mail account, added the google mail and google contacts caldav type accounts, forwarded all gmail to iCloud account, and set up the replies to come from gmail even though they say sending from @icloud. Such a cool workaround. Pretty easy to do. Thanks everyone.

I want to do this, but the the 5gig of space freaks me out.

The only reason I want to do this is because I'd rather use the stock mail app. I think it's better than the gmail app.
I think it just depends on how much email you get and how much of it you delete. Try it out, it's really simple to reverse if it doesn't work out for you.

I have no problems with the 5GB limit. I only use iCloud for email and app storage. I delete my email and have not even gone over 200MB at any time.

I have over three years of email in my iCloud account, plus I use it for backups and have all the features turned on across all my Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, MacBook) and still have 4.7GB of storage space left available. Email really takes like no space at all by itself; it's attachments and stuff that would push you over the line.

I've been forwarding my gmail to outlook.com for the last couple months and have zero complaints. Push has been fantastic. Forwarding and keeping a copy in gmail also provides a back up of all my email. Works great! I also moved over all my contacts and calendars to outlook.com as well. Like the web interface SO much better than me.com and gmail.
