It is the OS, ugh!

For what it's worth, we have a Mac using OS 10.4.11 w/ Toast 8 (older 2 core tower) and a couple of others using 10.5.7 (newer 8 core tower), the only place our La Cie with Toast 8 will make Blu-ray data files is on the 10.4 system, and it works as was advertised regarding formatting a DB as a dynamic disc. Just drag and drop, presto-change-O! Data files are moved and saved.
For some unknown reason the newer OS (10.5.7) will not work with the drives, nor has La Cie been able to offer any other suggestions than the OS is not compatible. For the cynical among us... we'll not go there.
So for the time being, until Mac & Sony come to terms, we are keeping one Mac's OS as 10.4.11, transferring data to a shared server where it can be then be transferred to Blu-ray. A bit of a dogleg in our workflow, but it works.
To recover data we reverse this process because OS 10.4.11 is the only OS that reads the data from the disc and allows a disc to be ejected from the La Cie hardware via on screen commands (in 10.5.7 you have to disconnect the fire wire and turn off the drive, then turn it back on and press eject).
10.5.7 will see the folders on a BD disc, but it says the folder has zero data in it and when the folder is opened the screen is blank, however when you "get info" on the folder is says the disc has 22.5 GB on it regardless of the actual amount of data in the files....data storage was the only reason for our buying these La Cie BD Burners.
We use Sony BDs.
Hope this helps.:apple:

I too am interested in an external blu-ray DVD burner.
I have to burn a DVD movie and menus from FCS to blur ray on my MBP with the OSX 10.5.7
From what I am reading DVDSP will not do that.
I have a DVD with menus and everything all set up, but the only software that I know that will burn to BD is Adobe Encore.
But has anyone had experience working with an external Bluray and adobe encore?
Should I wait for Snow Leopard?

I have found this, from MCE Technologies. Anyone have any idea if it's good? They make a 6x or 8x version, but the price difference is only $20 so it seems silly to go for the 6x.

Hey just got one of these, well over a week ago. AND
still not been able to burn a blue ray disk yet.
So many problems so far wish I didnt go down the route. I have customers that want me to produce Blue-Ray disks for their weddings and other activities.
Seems like Apple and Final Cut Studio and DVD Studio Pro will not work with output to Blu-Ray.
Watch, wait and don't buy yet.
I even have Toast with the Blu-Ray plug in to help that has not been successfull either.

Getting very frustrated....

Get Adobe Encore & you must have Toast 10 PRO

I'm planning to get a mac mini in august and I'm just wondering if you can use an external Blu-ray drive with osx to rip the blu ray discs via makemkv?

Or would i have to install window to use the blu-ray drive?

if you can use a blu-ray drive with osx, can someone recommend me one? thanks

Blu ray on a macbook pro

Hey guys, these posts are pretty old so i'm sure you'll have an answer for me by now. I have a macbook pro, running snow leopard on it and final cuts pro installed. i can't write blu ray, why not?
In desperation i bought an LG BH10LS30, put it in a 5.25" SATA enclosure and hoped it would work. It hasn't, i'm going to get toast for the notebook and see, but in the meantime what am i missing?

I bought this LG BluRay Burner from NewEgg.com and installed it into my hackintosh via the SATA port. I would assume you could simply buy an enclosure. I successfully have burned all types (not DL Blu-Ray). I have 10.6.1 and am using toast. I'm not impressed with how the blu ray speed is, but at least it's burning BD...

Need help with blu-ray for MBP la[top

I would just like to know which BD burner will work with my MBP 15 inch non unibody (silver keys) laptop. I do allot of Videography using Final Cut Studio 4 as my editing tool. I don't need it to be an internal burner, it can be external through USB or whatever connection might exist. I just don't want to shell out the money and find it will not read/write to my MBP laptop.

I am returning to this thread, which I read when searching for the same answer, to pass on the (thankfully) positive solution I found. I spent 8hours one weekend last month looking for it.

I bought this burner, along with Toast, at OWC (aka macsales): http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/MRF8BDSD12X/

I used this howto at OWC: http://eshop.macsales.com/articles/howto-burn-bluray-toast

Btw, I am a film maker who needed to burn a Blu-ray from my Macbook Pro for a cinema screening of a short film. The Blu-rays I burnt were better quality than a duplication house I used before. For the record, OWC's customer service is excellent.

Woo hoo

I can now confirm that the External blu ray writer from Buffalo 12x usb 3.0 works on my imac using Toast 10 pro with the Blu ray plug in. I'm able to drop high def 720p video recorded on my iphone into the toast blu ray movie editing program. Simple enough to use..... Buffalo just plugs into a usb port, totally plug n play no installation needed. i'm using imovie edited footage exported to the movie file at the highest setting 720p. Works like a charm. I like the idvd program for editing the dvd menu's better than what toast offers but oh well. Hope this helps.
