I was thinking My Cloud would be nice for laptops, if you like to go from lying down to standing to sitting with the laptop, though it is a bit slower to retrieve data because it is done wireless.

The cloud version (My Cloud) is $170 for 4TB. If you buy another one for backup, it would be $340.

The non-cloud version is cheaper at $140 for 8TB. If you buy another one for backup, it would be $280.

Which drive would be best to get?

Are we talking "backups" here?

My opinion only, but the best backup is one that you can "touch" and reach for in a moment of need. That means a hard drive that connects to the Mac (via USB or otherwise).

Having said that, if you're serious about backups, "one is not enough".
You need at least a SECOND backup, stored "off-site".
Some folks use the cloud, but I never really trusted the cloud to always "be there" or to fully protect my privacy.
Store the second backup at work, or in a building other than the one the computer is in.
For my data files, I keep a drive "in the car".

i would get a NAS box:
At least a 2bay device and do raid01
If you get a 4bay you can do raid05.
