Interesting, I really haven't thought about that at all. I just use Canon-Right Eye because it seemed right to me. When I now try it differently it is kinda awkward.

Lefties should take a look at Joe McNally's 'da grip' where he clamps down the camera against his shoulder. It only really works with the left eye.

After having a play I'm wondering if left eye Canon shooters get a sore nose from it rubbing on the click wheel?

Right handed, right eye. It just seem more natural to me that way. But some people can be either right eyed or left eyed anyway. There is a way to determine which one you are but I can't remember the exercise we used when I was an active soccer ref. Anyway, I always did it that way even way back when when I had a Nikon film camera. I shoot Canon now. Also, I have some astigmatism and I wear two different bifocal contacts. I use my left eye for reading and my right for distance. Sounds weird, but not really any weirder than wearing progressive lenses in your glasses.

I'm right handed, I shoot with my left eye. And I use a Canon. I have a rebel though, so I don't have to worry about a click wheel!

How many people had to go get their camera out to be sure though?

Unless there is a specific reason for it (like as some people state, they have vision irregularities in a particular eye) people will use their dominant eye in the viewfinder.

I am not positive the two are related, but IIRC like right-handedness, right-eye dominance seems to be more prevalent/common in the general population, so I expect the poll results to reflect this.

Designer Dale's test or other similar ones like that will very often result in you identifying the same eye you use to shoot through the viewfinder.

It has nothing to do with brand, I'm not sure why you structured the poll like that.
I am right handed but my left eye is dominant. I am trying to train my right eye but it's not going so well.:p

Right eye, and what does brand have to do with anything?

so far the brand thing is indicating a: more people use canon then nikon and b: the right/left eye ratio is greater in nikon suggesting that either its easier to use your left eye with canon - or that canon users don't know how to adjust their focus without taking their camera away anyway? :)

I'm an Olympus and Pentax user. What does that make me?

I don't know if it's because I'm left handed, but I use my left eye when I'm composing an image in my viewfinder.

Just as you have a dominant hand, you have a dominant eye. Folks who grow up with a mixed dominance live a tortured life because someone likely forced them to conform and be right-handed. An easy "test" is to roll up a peice of paper hand it to your subject and see which hand holds it to which eye. The world is still made for righty's but not so much anymore. One of our young'uns has mixed dominance but it was not forced on him, at least not at home. He was/is a very gifted athelete and adapted and overcame. He writes left, bats left, catches right and kicks a soccer ball equally as well with either foot. In the eye dominance demo, he is right eye dominant.
I never thought is was a big deal for him and his only complaint came when I asked him why he didn't keep climbing the pro surfer—snowboard ladder. His simple answer was "Dad, I can't go right".
For all the lefty's out there pushing buttons on cameras, my sympathies. Adapt cameras were built for righty's.
