Hi,

Can I just check, what’s the deal with Apple putting two versions of FCP, Logic, Pixelmator Pro etc on the App Store? To me, this is very un-Apple like! Normally, it’s simplicity and straightforward, not this convoluted mess!

I, like many have previously bought FCP outright but when I go to the App Store to re-download it, I have the us icon and the new purple one for the creator studio. My question is, do I have to download the usual one or shall I just download the new purple icon version as I assume that is what Apple is eventually going to have for everyone? Or can I not use the purple icon version because I don’t have the creator studio? Yet I got told it would still work like normal but without some AI features?

Sorry but this seems a mess. It’s the same with Pixelmator, Logic etc.

Thanks

Apple:
"What is the difference between the subscription version and a one-time purchase of Final Cut Pro?
A subscription to Apple Creator Studio bundles Apple’s powerful creative apps for one low monthly payment.
A one-time purchase will still be available, but access to some of the premium content is available only to Apple Creator Studio subscribers. If you already own Final Cut Pro, it will continue to be updated."

Without downloading the purple icon version I'd suggest that it's not usable without the in app purchase whereas the OG version is a single one off payment. The question remains as whether or not us users of the OG version (or anyone in future who outright buys the OG version going forward) will continue to get most updates or if it'll eventually quietly get put on life support and then killed off as macOS moves on year on year because sales have slowed to a crawl.

Unlike Aperture, though, Final Cut will still be getting development so I'd say that there's no technical reason for Apple to do this.

I'd just find it a bit much if you only use one of the apps in the Creator Studio - it would feel a lot like you're paying for stuff you'd never use.

Thanks for your replies. Yeah it’s just really confusing. For example, if I downloaded the OG Final Cut because I bought it outright but then decided I wanted the creator studio suite because I wanted to use Logic, I’d then might as well download the purple Final Cut and have two versions? It would surely be easier if you could just download the newest version (purple) and then use that and if you decide to pay the monthly fee it would unlock the ‘extra’ features?
