Which format type for my external SSD?

Now that my new M2 Mini is up and running I want to erase & start a new Time Machine for the Mini. I have a Samsung T7 1TB. Do I want to format it using APFS or Mac OS Extended? Does it really make a difference?

APFS if you want to use it exclusively on Apple products

exFAT if you want to connect it to other devices too


edit: didn't read that you're planning to use it for Time Machine.
i think it will automatically format those volumes to APFS if i'm not mistaken

My external drive is formatted half APFS for SuperDuper cloning and other half exFAT.

I don't use tm, but I believe it now requires APFS.

Just reformat the entire drive, and use it that way.
