Yep, in agreement.

I'm not too big of a gamer but seem to be addicted to Command and Conquer games.. :D

rFactor is good, but you need to try iRacing before you claim "realistic physics". lol

I've tried it, but there's no F1 cars and very few non-American tracks. ;) rFactor all depends on the quality of the mod you're racing. Some of the mods have incredibly realistic physics and some are just junk, but the track selection is the best of any game, ever.

The server I frequent follows the F1 calendar and its so cool to see the real drivers in the real cars making the same mistakes on race day that I've been making in the sim. :)

True. There is the '79 Lotus F1 coming that I'm looking forward to. They also announced Outlon Park and Brands Hatch to follow Silverstone. Takes a while for the tracks as they laser scan them all.

I need to try rFactor again though. Some of those new mods look really cool.

What do you run iRacing on? I'm getting a Mac Pro 1,1 soon and was hoping I would be able to run rFactor on parallels as I don't really want to install windows with bootcamp for one game.

'08 2.8 Octo Mac Pro with an 8800 GT. I don't think parallels will work for rFactor very well. I've never used Parallels or Fusion, but my understanding is, for games you need to use boot camp for full 3D acceleration.

It's kind of a pain to reboot all the time, but by the time I pull my racing seat and wheel/pedals chassis over to my desk, it's usually ready. lol. I also have to move my monitor to the edge of my desk.

Maybe next year I'll build another racing PC so I can leave everything setup all the time.

Ah ok. I read something about Parallels 4.0 being DirectX 9 compatible so I was hoping it would be able to run rFactor well enough since its not a very graphically intensive game.

the last time i tried X-plane, I used the keyboard on my TiPB G4. however looking at their site - http://www.x-plane.com/sysreq.html - it appears you do need a USB joystick.

you can always e-mail support and find out from the horses mouth too ;)

Thanks for the reply man, saw the requirements on that page and wondered if the keyboard is sufficient for the game. I don't want to invest in a joystick for the game. :) Just read that the game is 70gb, I just poop my pants...

*edit* Turns out they do tell you, at the very very bottom of the page.

"Joysticks and Yokes
No joystick is required. You can fly with the mouse or numeric keypad. But to really be realistic you need a joystick or yoke. Any modern USB joystick should be fine for both Mac and Windows. You can get them here at X-plane.com."

What is it? A flight simm? Is it free or commercial?

It's a flight sim. It's quite realistic for learning how to fly.
It has 60GB of global scenery so you can fly anywhere in the world.
You can fly just about any plane you can think of, from a Sopwith Camel to the Concorde.

You can change the weather from clear to zero/zero.
You can change the wind from zero to hurricane force.
You can use the simplest avionics to the some of the most complex.
It is free to demo but it will cost $39 if you look at the right vendors.

I make my own flight plans. I make my own cockpits.

X-Plane can be extremely gpu intensive if you have all the renderings on high.
As a matter of fact, no computer, no video card can fly X-Plane at it's highest renderings!

X-Plane

I am very interested in X-plane as well. Is a joystick required for play?

You can use your mouse.
If you really get addicted to the flight sim, you should get either a Saitek X52 joystick or a Saitek or CH Products Yoke and Quadrant.

Ideally I'd suggest an X52's throttle with a CH F-16 Fighterstick. The X52 stick is kinda "meh"

Wow! Topper! Thanks for the great explanation! So basically no rocket jumping off of other players' heads aye? :) Sounds pretty kewl otherwise tho. I started to install it once 3 or 4 years ago on a home made AMD 64-bit box but the maps and stuff didn't render right. It was a complex installation as I recall with fetching this and that data pack, so I probably messed it up myself somehow. Sounds like it might be worth another go tho!

Thanks again for the details! Much appreciated!

You are welcome.
Most people would probably rather have a flight sim that shoots down other planes.

If you do use it and have any questions, just send me a pm.

Thank you topper for the post, much appreciated it!

How much does the Saitek set up cost? I need to find out if Xplane ships to Hong Kong... I'll see if I can find a copy here in HK.

Thanks again.

You should be able to find the Saitek Pro Yoke (and quadrant) for $150 or a little less.
Amazon has it for $152 which includes free shipping.

No no, not 'shoot down other planes'. "Rocket jump off of other players' heads".
