Wow...! I didn't know my term of "going around it" meant over-exaggeration for some ppl.:rolleyes:

Oh, I believe he's referring to the part I bolded below:

It means the link that you've posted above as a example.... Going around it, there's no straight-forward process....

I thought a Mac is all about plug-and-play... isn't it..? :p:p

It's completely straightforward. In the 4870 ROM topic which was linked to on page 1, there's a whole newbie-friendly guide written out that spells out exactly how to do it. That's straightforward to me, and I've never flashed a card before.

The last I've checked, I had to go through the entire 4870 ROM flashing thread much to my confusion. Even now I can't seem to identify which process is valid for which card.

One thing about the PC world, there's just too much brand to go after, consumers are basically spoilt for choice. Different brand catered to different ROM to be flashed as I recalled.

As such these aren't what I called a straight-forward process a la plug-and-play. And flashing ain't my forte since I had bad experiences with them.

I agree. I have one figured out - maybe :p

Basically that thread is a total disaster place with noobs dropping in 3 posts to 1 asking the same question over and over thus trashing any coherency that could have been obtained.

What we need is a database of any and all cards for any and all versions of MacPro. If it's drop in compatibility. If it's not then simple steps and links to each needed app and ROM file. All in one place. I have been thinking about starting a new thread for the purpose of gathering and confirming those datas but I dunno what the participation level would be and how well I can word it to keep every n00b from posting "how do I flash this card" and "will this card work" every other message.

"Going around it" implies there is a long-drawn out process to follow that meanders all over the place and makes things needlessly complex. It's not a simple process by any means, but it isn't rocket science either. There's a tutorial, so provided someone who wants to flash their card can read and look at pictures on the internet, then there's not much scope for messing things up. If someone is comfortable with the DOS command prompt, burning ISOs and the like, and has previously flashed a BIOS, then there's nothing to be afraid of. The worst thing that can go wrong is that you end up with a card that doesn't work, and you can always re-flash it.
