Which HDD works with Time Machine

Do I need to buy an Apple HDD, or will other drives work with Time Machine? I was told that the HDD has to have some particular type of format in order for Time Machine to work. Thanks.

Any drive will work as long as it's formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
