My advice is that if you have a gut preference for one device or the other, if the mini or the Air just feels right, or looks right or makes you smile when you pick it up, go with that. We can list the pros and cons until the end of time, but I think for most it comes down to a subjective personal preference for one or the other. They are both great devices.

And of course if you possibly can, get your hands on each model and try them out for a bit.

I dont think that new iphone 6 or whatever the name is ever going to be able to replace an ipad mini. A phone is a phone and reading a pdf document on an iphone is just way too hard even they will make a bigger screen lets say 5inches.
And to conclude the thread I had two devices side by side.. And the ipad air is waaay too big for me. I mean come on it must be a portable device. Of course its a personal opinion but I want to have an intimate reading session and take it from my backpack while waiting subway and air is not designed for that. I noticed that air is good for photography etc. but not for pdf reading as it is way too big to hold way too wide to focus. Anyways thats my opinion hope this helps other confused people :)

It really does come down to personal preference because as I held both devices side by side, I came to exactly the opposite conclusion - Air won hands down for me. I pull mine out of my backpack everyday on the train as well and it works great for me. The extra size makes reading a PDF feel more comfortable and more like I'm reading the printed page, size-wise.

Again, it's just whatever floats your boat in the end.

Agree that a larger iPhone won't necessarily replace a Mini for PDF reader, but it will certainly change the playing field if they put out a 5.5" iPhone and you've then got a Mini that's now just 2.4" bigger. My point being it may push people to an Air if they have an iPhone that big.

I may still get the misses a rMini cuz I do still want to play with one from time to time. :)

I don't think that they will be doing an iPhone 5.5" in the next two years. The best possible expectation won't exceed 5". Bets are for 4.5". You never know Apple though.

Agree with others ... iPad mini feels a bit small for reading .pdfs especially if you're going to be doing a bunch of reading. Regular iPad w/retina would be a good option.

However, having owned all 5 gens, I would probably look for an iPad 3 or 4. My current iPad Air feels a tad fragile, not sure how it'll do in a backpack full of medical books, stuff, etc. If you get an iPad Air, probably should also consider AppleCare+ for breakage warranty.
