I'm guessing that it'll be the iPad mini 2 and 3 and iPad Air and Air 2 that are sold. They'll drop the 1st gen mini and iPad 4th gen. Then all iPads would either be A7 or A8.
That should make it easier from a development standpoint as Apple makes the switch to 64-bit. Mind, I can already imagine how bad the Air will perform when iOS goes 64-bit only.

The original Mini is getting IOS 8. Doubt it will be discontinued.

I don't think that really has an impact. The iPhone 4 and 5 got iOS 7 but were discontinued, and the 5 will get iOS 8 as well. On the iPad side, the iPad 3rd gen got iOS 7 but had been discontinued prior. The 3rd gen will also get iOS 8. This is the beauty of Apple: they may stop selling a device, but it will continue to be supported for a little while after.

A5 and A6(x) devices are way outdated at this point; if Apple discontinues the iPad mini 1st gen and iPad 4th gen, then the only A6 is the iPhone 5c which was just introduced last year.

Most of us believe that Apple will refresh the iPad lineup sometime this autumn, by bringing in a new 'Air 2' model.

Presumably though, they will retain one of the older 16gb models to sell at the 'slightly-less-unaffordable' price point, in keeping with previous years.

Do you folks think they'll choose to keep the iPad 4, or hang on to the 1st generation air? My inkling is that the 1st gen air will be discontinued..

I'd guess that the fourth gen iPad will be dumped in place of the current iPad Air. Also, the first generation iPad mini will definitely be replaced in favor of the second to be sold in its place while the third generation will be the main model.
