Which is the best and most versatile video converter?

What is the most versatile video converter for an Apple Mac running OSX?

I have some videos that I want to put on an Archos AV500. The AV500 is a small portable video player with a 4" screen.

Some of the videos were downloaded from the web.
The videos are in a wide range of formats, many of which do not play on the Archos AV500.

So I am looking for a video converter that is very versatile. Plus hopefully one that's also fast. Obviously a free one would be preferable to one that I have to pay for.

I have tried ffmpegX and iSquint. But neither works with all files that I need to convert.

All advice appreciated.

Try MPEG Streamclip (free) or iVideoConverter ($9.90). I use the latter and find it quite versatile and neat. You can try both and see which one suits your needs best..

Also investigate Handbrake, and Video Monkey (used to be Visual Hub).

Both free too.

Flv Crunch is what I use. The linked site will tell you the formats it is capable of converting.

I use Quicktime Pro.

Handbrake for DVDs.
