brushed aluminum > plastic reinforced glass anytime in terms of looks and feel. I am still amazed how awesome the original iphone feels in the hand. The iphone 4/4s feels really sharp and after you have used it and it gets warm it feels just like plastic.

So the original iphone wins. Although its really fat compared to the iphone 4/4s. Its a tough call. But overal I would still go for the iphone 4/4s since thinness+glass+steel > aluminum+plastic.

If I cared, I'd pull up all the 2 year old posts where everyone was hating on the new flat square, glass design of the iP4 (me included). Have to admit, though, the 4 carved it's own design path (which was easy with all those sharp edges, ha!).

Makes you wonder, though, why no one bothered to copy that design, but copied the 2 and the 3 instead? I, too, go with the 3GS as a better design, better looks, better durability and better comfort to hold and pocket. It also didn't need a case to keep the back from shattering.

OP is not asking about function. This was asked strictly for design. If both the first iPhone came out at the same time of the 4/4s and were both had similar specs, alot of people would pick the OG iPhone based on curves, that shiny chrome bezel, and a back that doesn't shatter from a 3ft drop. Only thing that would make it better on the back would be adding a glowing Apple logo like their MacBooks. People seem to be biased for what phone they currently use and the OG iPhone sold the least amount being it was expensive at the time. Less people experienced it while many more have with its successors.

The op didn't, but the person I replied to was talking about practicality.

Agreed. 3GS+ Retina+ LTE = profit. I do like my iPhone 4, but its just not ergonomic at all for me, at least.

That would be fantastic phone. No doubt the design of the iPhone 4/s is amazing, but the ergonomics are not as good. Plus I like the way the 3G/s looked when sitting on a table.

Also all iPhones should have a black front, and your choice of color on the back ala 3G/s. The white front looks weird.

I'm wondering what the reasoning is for the people that voted the iPhone 4 over the iPhone 4S.

Keep in mind that the 4S had the redesigned antenna to fix the issues with the 4's design, and the 4 eventually came in two layouts (GSM and CDMA) - Apple discovered the design/layout of the 4 needed to be changed.

They prefer the spacing of the toggle switch on the iPhone 4 ;)

The 3G and 3GS where essentially the same.

The 4 and the 4S are essentially the same.

I liked the original iPhone, but it was clunky. The 3G and 3GS felt good in the hand, it was durable, and the reception was terrific.

The 4 and 4S feels very quite quality. I like them all, but right now my favorite is the 4 and 4S.

I voted for 4S even though I have a 4 just because the antenna was fixed.

I really like the original and it still has the classic charm, but the 4/4S is just so well designed. I was thinking that it would be sad to ditch the design.

It's funny how smartphones are so commoditized and democratized that we want a new design every year when just a few years ago, such a design with such premium materials and components was just not possible. Good design isn't appreciated these days. I wonder if the iPhone 4/4S design in any other era would have become an valuable piece – just like Braun products – fit for a museum. It makes me want to baby my iPhone even more and sell it later even though I dropped it a couple of times already :(

I agree, they are identical designs between them.

There are few differences in design, but there are: Outside the U.S. most people only know the AT&T version of the iPhone 4. So the Verizon design is what we know as the 4S design. It's subtle, yes, but I prefer it over the "original" iPhone 4 design.
