I just did the 14" iBook vs 12" PBook debate. I was sold on the iBook. I was going to order the iBook. I was going to save 50 bucks by ordering the iBook. And then I ran to the CompUSA for a final look. The PBook was just soooooooooo much nicer to me. The response time was faster, the look was crisper and the machine looked cleaner. I am glad I chose the PBook. I would have been happy with the iBook but I am just giddy with my little guy!

A month ago, I was going to buy a new PowerBook; 12", 15", or 17". I have owned the 15" titanium and the 12" prior, and I preferred the 12" then as well as now. The ultimate selling point was the portability. I too am a grad student, and have no problems with screen real estate. If I have to run any applications that require more (really only Excel), I just hook up an external monitor.

As for durability, yeah, the iBook is relatively built like a tank, but as long as you're not going to play baseball with it, durability isn't really an issue. A decent sleeve will take care of it.

well......in my opinion..........if you need portability then go for the 12"........but if you don't care THAT much about portability then get a 15 or 17 .............the screen is just SO much superior!...i have the 15" and this is GREAT!!......sometimes i even stare at it and wish i would have gotten the 17! but i didnt have that kind of money ...................but it great!!...anyways............don buy a computer thinking you'll spend MORE cash buying external displays................if you'll do that.....then get a 15 or a 17".................

they're GREAT machines and the size ROCKS!......take mine to work EVERYDAY and watch a movie EVERYDAY when work gets cold :p hehehee

today i watched HELLBOY heheheh my 15" is great for this!.....i can imagine the 17" (drools!)

I think an external display is the best way to go. 12" for ultimate portability, then come home to a 20-23" to 12" spanned.

Please take it easy on the periods too
:)

It bears repeating. That until the video card is updated in the iBook, that with Tiger just around the corner - the Core Image compatibility should be highly considered.

Yes.

Yes, they do. I hate this aluminium thing. Sure, it's quick, but it has so many issues which the iBook had locked down. I'm planning on getting a nice insurance policy and working it to a quick and painless death, whereby the latest and greatest iBook will greet me. I've still not had chance to write down just why I hate it so much... maybe tomorrow... with pictures

you hate it!!!  make a new thread with the "issues" i would be interested to see your thoughts. and pictures! :)

I guess I could never use the 12" PB full time, but as a portable, it is the best. I am saying that 12" is too small because I come from 20"+ LCD monitors.
When I was looking for portable computers two months ago, I found Sony V505EX at BestBuy to be a great purchase (I am a hard core PC). But Last Friday, I ran into PB at the Apple store and saw the solid design and application loading time and etc. I talked myself into buying a Mac and learning the Mac OSX to have the PB.
It doesn't feel as flimsy as other plastic laptops I have owned and the look is great. Also the full size keyboard is a plus.
I could never haul the 15" or 17" as comfortably as 12". You are welcome to pry it off my cold dead hands now that I read the Mac OSX the missing manual.
