Yeah, I kinda thought that too.Actually, I'd say it weighs slightly in the 11" favor.
Was that a pun?...it weighs slightly...
If portability is not a concern, get the bigger one. I find myself spending a lot of time on the kitchen table and not needing to connect to a monitor.
13 hooked up to 27 acd
11 is tempting but batt life makes it not as nifty
I found it totally the opposite, with the 11" I found myself hunched over it all the time. The 13" I find more comfortable to rest my hands on, type on, read from, it's noticeably more powerful than the 11" when using applications like Logic, better for image editing in photoshop. The list goes on.
I had a chance to toy with an 11" before plunging for the 13".
There is just something about the smaller profile of the 11" that I don't quite like. The 11" feels very awkward to use when putting on my lap or when I'm lying down because I always seem to need higher elevation. I'm 6' 1" it might just be my height.
Screen resolution is also a huge factor because texts on the 11" seem very tiny, and I write codes, read books a lot on my computer. Having to resize everything to adapt to the smaller screen size of the 11" is tedious work to me, and not to mention I get less of the screen to play with that way.
Last but not least, I do travel quite regularly, and the battery life of the 11" is too short for me. I'm accustomed to a full day without a charger on my MBP, and after a day of using the 11", it quickly proved to me that the smaller form is only so that I have more room for a charger. I went for an iPad 2 instead at the time.
Now I just exchanged the iPad 2 for a 13" and can't be happier.
A what now?!!! Maybe the 11" is superior when it comes to handling but to imply that the 13" is best suited for sitting on a desk is mind-boggling. I feel sorry for anyone's legs/arms that are so darned fragile that they can't bear the incredible weight/dimensions of a 3 lb. laptop.
The 13 is perfectly okay to use while lounging around the house.
The next step is to try them at home for at least a day each. Try the 11" first. If you love it, and don't mind the screen size, then you are done. Otherwise try the 13".
Why do it in that order? Chances are you are more familiar with what a larger size laptop feels like, but not the 11" MBA. Once you try the 11" MBA and decides that it works for you, there is less of a compelling reason to try a 13". On the other hand, if you try the 13", you will be second guessing what the 11" feels like.
That's exactly what I did. I originally wanted a 13" for its vertical resolution, but really wasn't sure whether the 11" screen would be fine, and I really like its form factor. After a day, I kept wishing there were more vertical screen space and realized that I didn't mind the MBA being larger. I switched to the 13" and it turned out to be the right size for me. In addition the larger screen and higher resolution, I actually prefer the larger MBA and I love the bigger trackpad. The extra battery life is a bonus.
"Feyd! Where's my laptop!?!"
And put me down for the 13" form factor, presuming you're going to walk around the house with it and use it from room to room. If you think you'll be mostly at a desk or table, 11" with external monitor would be a good combination of maximum screen space when you need it, maximum portability when you don't.
Then again, for me, the 11" doesn't seem to compromise as much when reading or typing primarily text. The size, ratio, pixel density, etc of the screen combined with the scrollpad and tap to zoom works pretty well. Viewing images-still pictures-not video seems to be a bit compromised on the tiny Air.
...now I've got that 'dunn......dunn......dunn..dunn' theme stuck in my head!
I can also add some input...
I originally wanted an 11" because I thought it would work perfectly and fit my form perfectly...plus the price was lower. However, I went in to Apple last night to purchase my MBA and I tried both the 11" and the 13" and I must say, the 13" definitley stole my heart. I also do a lot of remote work from home and the extra 1.6" will help with that. It is still just as portable and versatile.
Hope you enjoy your MBA!![]()
By the sounds of things the 13" is going to serve you best. Also, without the two side by side the 13" is a very small thin computer.
You have given more reasons to buy the 13" over the 11" so that's the way to go. For long hours of use you'll be glad you did.
if i were you, i'll certainly go for 13". Can't really do any work stuff on 11's tiny screen. Used to have a sony vaio, 10" screen. it looks cool, but it's just horrible to do any thing apart from web browsing : (
I've worked a few days from home on my 13" (Remote Desktop + web-based tools) and I think it's a pretty ideal compromise. It has the resolution (and thus screen real estate) of a 15" MBP, but is still incredibly thin and light.
That's not to say the 11" wouldn't work, but I don't know how I'd feel losing the pixels, not to mention the physical space.
I have similar requirements to yours in that I work from home, but I also travel as well. The 2011 MBA 13" is perfect for me. I had a long thought about which one would be best, but the extra screen estate is so worth it (to me) when I am away from the 24" monitor. The 13" is still very portable and light and I am very happy with mine. The 11" physical size and screen resolution are a little bit too low for my needs.
Tough choice. I know many debate this endlessly in their minds. I spent about a half hour in the Apple store comparing them. Side by side, the 13" is huge. But if you are not using it next to an 11", it may not be so big. I was ready to go with an 11", but now I am swinging toward the 13". Reasons being I have a 27" iMac and an iPad2. I don't like the iPad as much as I thought I would for a lack of keyboard and ability to run certain apps. But it's great for travel with my collection of movies and such. So I probably will not take the MBA over the iPad when traveling (which I don't do that much of anyway). My current lappy is one from work, a 15" MBP early 2010 with an i5. That feels like a brick compared to either of the MBA's. It also runs pretty hot (although I think all my open Firefox windows may contribute to it). So I guess the 13" more closely matches what I am using now, less about 12lbs it seems. I really like the 11" *a lot*. But with my current hardware, the 13" makes more sense.
Consider that the Airs have so-so viewing angles, and not at all comparable to a Macbook Pro. Try one out in the store and see if standing at oblique angles is workable. The 11" is a "hand-it-here" kind of experience, and if you find the angles acceptable, the 13" could be "gather 'round"
Buy the 11 and 13 inch, take the screen off the 13 and slap it on the 11?
But seriously, either would be great. The 11 would be good for pulling out and sitting down and doing "work" on it, however, if you are showing them pictures, they'll be more likely to enjoy sitting around you and looking at the pictures together on the 13 inch.
People are more accustomed to larger screens; not everybody has an 11 inch notebook/screen at home. Because of this, looking at an 11 might change or stop the... flow, if you will, of the sale. If everything's going great and how show it to them and they have to stoop down and squint, that won't be good.
On the other hand, sitting down in front and having them sit around or peer over you would be great; they'd also like actually looking at the laptop itself.
TLDR: The presentation would be better with the 13.
I own both 11" and 13" MBAs. I vastly prefer the 11". The extra size is nearly irrelevant when traveling. Once it is in a bag... it really does not matter too much.
I think the 13" is vastly inferior in terms of handling during use. If you simply keep it on the kitchen table or desk... then the 13" is fine. If you use it on the couch, recliner, bed, etc... then the handling of the 11" is so superior.
My wife only uses hers on a table. For her 13" is best. I personally use it all over the house... usually in a casual reclined position. For me, the 11" is much better. Both of us travel a lot... and the two machines are nearly identical during transit.

Theres something about the Apple Store that makes the 11" seem tiny. I bought the 13" originally thinking the 11 was too small, but after trying the 11 also I realized that the screen resolution actually makes it very comfortable and I returned the 13". I even have a 24" monitor at home but I dont bother with it as much because i just love using this thing on my lap.
Obviously its all personal choice, but Im very glad I got to try the 11" in a real world environment because I find it to be the perfect blend of portability and usabilty.
I own both as well.
I too like how the 11" Air handles when sitting on couch, recliner, patio ... you don't have to keep your legs flat, more fun to use in any position.
For that reason, even though I 'should' be grabbing for the 13" due the added screen size which is beneficial for my design work, I opt for the 11" 7 maybe 8 times out of 10.
I'm not suggesting that's the best for being the most productive but for me I just love to use the 11" ... and hey maybe I'm actually more productive on the 11" in the long run, since I get more done by using it places and for longer periods where I don't normally work.
Looks to me the 13" is what I 'need' but the 11" is quickly proving itself to be the one I 'want'.
I own both an 11" Ultimate 2010 MBA and a 13" base 2010 MBA.
I carry the 11" more than I use it. But when flying (as I do frequently) the 11" is worth its weight in gold because I don't have to strip it out of a bag going through TSA security. Everyone else is hauling out their laptops; mine stays in the bag and sails through x-ray without a problem.
If you're not going to be traveling or toting the computer around town, I'd honestly go with the 13". I really enjoy the 13" screen; the resolution is equal to the 15" MBP. Performance from the 13" will not disappoint; connected to my 24" ACD, feels very snappy indeed.
If I had to choose between one or the other (and fortunately, I don't) I'd probably pick the 11" because form matters to me more than function when I'm on the road. If you're not on the road, stick with the 13" - it makes more sense all the way around.
I'd go smaller and use a display. I actually need both 20" displays that I use for work so the size of the laptop is inconsequential to me.
I posted some observations in another thread yesterday, so apologies for repeating them but they're also relevant to this thread:
I've found the 11" to be perfectly usable; I was expecting there to be some occasions where I might briefly long for a larger screen, but so far there haven't been any. And I don't mean that I've "put up" with the smaller screen, I simply haven't come across a single scenario where it's been an issue (and my smallest desktop is the 27" iMac, so I'm used to a lot more screen estate to work with). CS5, FCP X, remoting servers, running a Win7 virtual machine to enable a remote virtual desktop - no problems anywhere, which has surprised me.
Battery life on the i7 for me is around 2.5 - 3 hours, wifi on, bluetooth off, quite heavy app usage (including Parallels running Win7), screen brightness between 25%-50%, keyboard light off. I did buy a 65W charger to keep at work - it's cheaper than the 45W one and means I've always got a fully charged lappie when I'm mobile.
So, for working from home, in my experience the 11 has been fine, and the additional portability of it for when I do need to be mobile is excellent. My wife was fixed on getting the 13", thinking the 11 would be too small, but after using my 11" for a while she's changed her mind.
Having said all that, the only person who can decide for you is you - so I'd also suggest you simply buy one and try it out, then return it and try the other.
i have the 11 and its perfect. Had the 13inch 2010 model last year after selling my ipad but then sold the air and back to ipad 2!!
anyway got the new 2011 11 inch and use it for drawing up my designs in ArchiCAD, im suprised that i can work will with it. I do use my imac 24 inch now and again to draw plans but the 11 inch works very well.
I am tempted to get the new thunderbolt display and give the imac to my son so i can hook the air up as and when needed.
I think really only you can decide but i just loved the size of the 11 inch, seen it as an extension of the ipad, i love the ipad but just found i could not do much productive work on it.
the 13 inch is your way to go
I agree, 13" is the best option. Better battery, faster processor in the base model, extra slot if you ever need it,
What "extra slot"?
SD card slot (it's only in the 13" MBA in case you ever need it)
Ah, you should have said SD instead of "extra"; extra could imply RAM, HD, or other (for people who aren't knowledgeable about the computer).
The SD card slot can come in handy. It works with the Eye-Fi card so no adapter is needed. I have about a dozen SD cards for my cameras and being able to stick them in there is nice.
You also have a thinner bezel, greater screen resolution, longer battery, louder sound availability, same slimness, and faster processor (when comparing base models) to go along with your SD card slot. Is that really all worth sacrificing just to have a smaller/stunted screen when moving the laptop from your bedroom to the kitchen OP?
Very interesting. I wasn't aware of this. My main camera (40D) actually uses a CF card (which I'm not fond of, frankly) but lately I've been getting more use out of smaller cameras (still and video) that DO use SD cards. So... interesting.Eye-Fi is an SD card that has a built in WiFi antenna. It lets you wirelessly send pictures you take on any camera that uses SD cards (like my Rebel T2i) to my MacBook or iPad. You sometimes need to stick the card into a computer to configure it, and it comes with a USB SD card reader (which I've misplaced somewhere). I have several lying around, but not having to carry one is great. I have three cameras that all use SD cards, and being able to stick them into the MacBook to download and edit my photos is very convenient.
Wow, Fernandez, awesome work. Thanks very much for that!
For Jboater: I'll Google Eye-Fi, but what the heck is it?
For Amitdoc: You mentioned a thinner bezel a couple of times. Is that just a cosmetic thing, or ?? (I guess I'm not sure what you mean)
Thanks, guys!![]()
OP and I are in a very similar position so thought I would answer as well. For me, it's about the smaller all-around size/weight and footprint that make it worth it. If you physically compare the two, it's a drastic difference in that regard that makes the 11" so desirable and almost negates the 'stuntedness' of the screen. I figured that, with Lion's fullscreen and zoom gestures, it would help as well. I also would not use the SD slot at all, the bezel is thicker but I actually don't notice until someone points it out, I would rarely take it out of the house so longer battery isn't a huge influence, I would plug it into speakers for any sound that matters, and I would get the highest config of either one so performance isn't an issue. Man am I trying to justify the 11"... :\
Ahh, good, I was wondering where you were! I've been slowly getting sucked into the 13" camp (it really DOES make logical sense, as you know) but you continue to keep me grounded in my undecided state of being attracted to the smaller/lighter 11". Well the OP plans to use this laptop in the kitchen, while having coffee, etc. Let's pretend he/she spends 2-3 hours in the kitchen, and then another 2-3 hours eating, having coffee, mingling in family room, etc.. before moving back to the main desk where the laptop is being charged.
Well, the OP would inconveniently need to carry the charger WITH him/her if he/she was using the 11" and maneuver it around whatever is on his/her kitchen table, dining table, etc to make space to plug it in because it will not last more than 2-4 hours on battery in that combined 5-6 hours of above usage time before returning to the main desk where the OP leaves it for charge/main work.
However, with the 13" the OP will likely not have to worry about this at all. I mean, does the OP really want to have to monitor their battery everytime and carry the charger back and forth and maneuver the wires between obstacles/food/coffee on the table to plug it into a socket all the time? It takes away from the experience in my opinion.
For the OP, this becomes a choice between carrying an 11" + Charger around (or without charger and keeping an eye on the battery all the time), versus just carrying the 13" around alone with no worries.
And for what? To lose all the extra bonus features I mentioned in previous posts, just to get a smaller footprint that isn't needed? Sure its cute, but wait till the cute product can become just as convenient one day. From my understanding, neither DieterRams nor the OP will be inconvenienced from 13" but want a cute tiny laptop that nobody is gonna barely ever see outside their home and take its inconveniences on a daily basis for it.

For the record:
1. I'm a he.
2. I do drink coffee every morning, but gee, not THAT much!*
3. *I'm on/using my computer more than not using it. *Chances are pretty good that it won't be sitting for too long while I "lounge around the house." *If I leave it unattended (like if I go grab some lunch, for example) I would absolutely plug the laptop into an outlet.
Just wanted to set the record straight. *
P.S. -- does the 13" really get THAT much more battery life than the 11"??
You're being sensible, nothing wrong with that.
But, it doesn't make up for the absolute 'wow' and fun factor the 11" Air provides ...
I have both the 11 and 13" within reach everyday. The larger screen is a benefit for the kind of work I do ... Right or wrong I grab for the 11" 80% of the time... I love that little computer.
