I cannot decide between the iMac and the Mac Pro for photoshop work (digital painting) and motion graphics work (cinema4d/modo) as well as after effects. I don´t need portability so that rules out the mbp and I am also worried about heat issues. I know the mbp has heat issues with pro apps and my question is, does the iMac suffer the same?

I just need something that will be fast enough and powerful enough for my needs and to run quietly. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks

any imac should be more than capable, no need to go for a mac pro really unless you want it for other reasons as well.

Typically, if you have to ask about the Mac Pro, then you don't need it.

The iMac should work for ya, and I've never experienced any heat issues.

iMac i7 (best for price/value)
MacPro 6-core 3.33 (best for Photoshop)
MacPro 12-core 2.93 (best for Cinema4D/modo rendering)

If you already have a monitor (or monitors), I'd go with a Mac Pro 6-core and a 5870. That will keep you for quite some time. But you may want to wait a month or two as there may be new Mac Pros around the corner.
