Yeah, you could do that. The only thing is that with her edu rebate, she can buy one desktop and one laptop per year so she can't buy a laptop for herself right after, she'll have to wait for next year (not too far though).

Frederic

she won't be buying a mac anytime soon, she hates them and she thinks their over-priced,,

That is quite typical. Apple has changed a lot over the past couple years so I bet when you get one she'll at least adjust her hate or maybe even like 'em.

With each new Mac these days, the configurations are becoming more and more competitive. Many cases where they are hundreds cheaper then from Dell.

Research would show that it is not twice as much in most cases. Silly arguments people have.

Do your homework. Spec out a Dell or whatever, then do an Apple. Show her the difference. It won't be much if any at all.

Also take into consideration resale value. That Mac is going to sell for much more 2 years down the line than that Dell. That is a factor.

what pc would have the same specs than today's lower-end MacBook
and what pc would have the specs than a lower-end MacBook with C2D?

It's not just the price of the hardware.
You have to add in the real cost of useable software, A/V licenses, time to maintain and hassle factor.

And you simply can not ignore maximum versatility being able to run ANY software, be it Mac OS X, Windows, Vista or Linux on one machine.
Apple's education discount for hardware, accessories and software too.

You just have to be a bit realistic with your expectations.

Any damn laptop can run office applications, email, send a photo or a document, play music and play movies.

You're looking at a machine capable of advanced pro applications.

I still don't know what i should do,,,portability or overall better and cheaper computer,,
and with the new macbooks right around the corner,it makes it even harder... ugh!!!

Get a macbook + external drive ... students need mobility and you will appreciate it. IF NOT get a refurb mac mini 500 odd bucks (core duo) + 80$ 15.4" widescreen monitor. Now a days a lot of USB cams are working with mac. So you can save some money that way.
