    I'm after abit of advice please.

    I'm considering which Mac mini to get, I've narrowed it to either;

    4gb ram + 500gb hard drive i5
    8gb ram + 1tb hard drive i5

    It will be for general use and some basic use of iMovie editing. Could I get away with the 4gb model or shall I stop being tight and stump up for the 8gb model!?

    If you are unsure, you better go for more ram. Even though the mini is a desktop computer, you cannot upgrade the ram if you find more is needed. And even if it might work now, it is likely future osx in a few years will be even more ram hungry.

    Get a 2012 model with 4 GB. If you find you need more later you can always upgrade to 8 GB with ease.

    If you are thinking of the new 2014 mini, get the mid-level with 8gb ram + 1TB HD. It's a better value than the base model.

    Apple charges $100 to bump the base model 1.4 i5 to 8gb and that brings you up to $600. For another $100 you can jump to the 2.6 i5 which already comes with 8gb RAM and gets you double the hard drive space and better graphics.

    I tested the new base mini (1.4 i5 4GB RAM/500GB HD) at the Apple store and did not think that 4GB RAM was enough. Start doing several things at once and the machine really bogs down. Since the RAM is soldered in place and cannot be upgraded, bite the bullet now and get more RAM. It will also future proof you to some extent.

    Yes indeed, I wouldn't get any Mac with 4GB of RAM in it today, especially when its soldered on and no upgrading later. Especially if you want to do iMovie use.
