I used to buy new MacBook Pros whenever they came out but am still on the 2015. I keep thinking the next release will bring back MagSafe or have reliable keyboards, but I keep being disappointed. My wife can't get a new MacBook for her work either, because of the keyboard problems and because the 2015s are phased out. Everyone is waiting.

Mag Safe is never coming back...

It was a novel idea, but universal compatibility of the current ports far outweighs MagSafe novelty.

In your view. Considering that very few docks will actually charge the 15'' under load (that don't come with a considerable price tag), the loss of magsafe is being replaced by nothing of value.

Other manufacturers do both. They provide a proprietary charging solution, but also allow for charging via USB C in a pinch (you provide the charger). This also allows for components which would push the computer over the 100W USB C limit, if Apple wished to include them to make a more potent theoretical future MBP.

That's the biggest headache. Apple pushes these technologies, and forces everyone to adapt, and then abandons them. Firewire audio interfaces (which can be VERY expensive and are made to last for many years), now need two separate dongles to use them, and still have compatibility issues. At least this time USB-C is an industry standard and not some new protocol they invented and can just abandon.

You should put up a separate poll for form vs. function. I chose function over form, but were you to ask separately:

Form: 2016-Present
Function: 2012-2016
I suppose this is a great way of putting it. The form of the current generation is pretty good, but then again the form leads to the function and I HATE my 2016 MBP. By far the worst computer I have ever owned and it is miles more expensive than any of the Macs or PCs I have had in the past.

The poll above is not structured correctly.
It should be:
2012-2015
2016-present
true... I don't know how to change it from an existing option though.

Technically not wrong, as it was still sold until Oct. of 2016 (if we go down that road though it would be 2006-2009, 2008-2016 and 2012-2016) but its time as current did extend into 2016 more than it didn't

I had the 2012 15 inch rMBP and now the 2018 15 inch MBP. The 2018 is my favorite between the two in terms of design/form factor, keyboard (ie yes, I prefer the Gen 2 butterfly keyboard), trackpad and even for the inclusion of the touchbar.

I found the 2012 to be a very nice laptop....but very heavy! I did prefer it in terms of ports and MagSafe....but the current 2018 version gets my vote!

Design wise, 2016+ looks the best. Makes the previous gens outdated. Everything is maximized and minimized to the max possible all around.

Was typing on my new MBP 2015 15” last night and it was so very nice. No thunderbolt 3, not as thin, and not as bright a display as the 2016-2018, so something to be said for those, but this is still a beautiful design, and look, compact enough, display is gorgeous, and ports that can do just about anything. And it’s durable.

Was looking over my MBP 17” last night, now that’s a real ‘Pro’ work station. Wish they’d do a modern version of that.

The 17" MBP was great. Sadly Apple doesn't seem to care about the pro market anymore, so we probably will never see another one.

I had two of these. It was great, like a portable iMac. My second one is still running. Gave it to med student to use.
Yeah, I used a 17" 2006 iMac for quite some time. Would be cool to have a laptop with a screen the same size as that, but with better specs.

It was a great desktop replacement. Not very portable felt like 4x8 sheet of plywood but loved the screen real-estate. Took on plane just once and it was a little awkward. Remember the commercials with a midget using the 17 in and NBA basket ball player using the 12 in on a plane.

First favourite would be 2012-2015. I have a 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro and I love it.

Second favourite would be the 2008-2012 design. It's sinply iconic.

Third would be 2016 and up. Simply looks much better than the 2006-2008 model, but not as good as the 2008-2015 designs.

Last would be 2006-2008. I'm not a fan. It's the only design to use all silver on the computer, not counting the matte second gen 2009-2012 MacBook Pros.

I used a cheap 17” PowerBook for a brief period and loved it. It could even play Doom 3 kind of okay which for a Mac laptop at that time was just the best.

Still one of my fave Apple ads though.

Typically I’ve been the b-ball player. 6’3” and like my tiny computers. Like Will Ferrel in the SNL skits with the teeny phone.

For me it's the 2016+ design. I think they are some of the best looking notebooks. I've had a nTB 2016 MBP since launch and have zero issues with it so far. Perhaps mine is an outlier, but it's actually been more reliable than my 2012 15" rMBP.

I'm a fan of the latest design, such a premium feeling computer.

Not a MBP, but my original 2007-ish black matchbook was a looker in it's day too.

Design in terms of looks or in terms of how it works?

Looks - tie between 2015 and 2018
Works - 2015 by far
