Hello there!
Currently I have a OS X El Capitan, 10.11.6 Macbook Pro (retine, early 2015, 13 inch).

I need to update it to something SIMILAR but newer as mine is getting old.
I am not computer savvy, and all I need the Macbook pro for is to make family iMOvies and browse the internet. I'd rather iMovies program were similar to the one I am currently having so there's not much of a learning curve!
Any recommendations?

I am also concerned a lot about privacy, don't want any tracking or spying.
Please, advise!
Thank you very much!

Your application scenario is very simple. I think the standard M1 PRO can meet your requirements. I personally recommend at least 32G of RAM. After all, the video memory and memory are shared, and the SSD is at least 1T. If you don’t move frequently, 16-inch is used to edit videos and browse the web, which is definitely a very good visual experience.

I also had a 2015 13" MBP, which I traded for a base 14" MBP. The base 14" MPB feels like ten times the performance of the 2015 13" MBP. If you are even remotely satisfied with your 2015 MBP, I think you will find one of the base M1 Pro MBPs will be more than sufficient. (The 2015 13" MBP only has Intel integrated Iris graphics, which is a very weak GPU and uses shared RAM, and it has only a 2-core CPU, and most models had only 8GB RAM.)

Size is your preference: the 14" is almost identical in overall dimensions and weight to the 2015 13" MPB, but has a nicer and slightly bigger screen; the 16" is significantly larger and heavier.

I think the 1TB SSD upgrade is good value for $200.

thanks everybody!!
I heard/read Macbook Airs break down much sooner than Macbook Pros, that's why I was leaning towards a Pro. What do u think? I make lots of movies and store family pics on the computer, so don't want it to slow down and break down early.

Perhaps there are more problems with Intel Macbooks because the Airs are so thin but it's not a problem for the MacBook Air. We have had one for almost a year and it's absolutely fine.

really anyone out there

my freelance employer is using and loving the Microsoft Surface Studio for web based movie clips for his internet company and loves the total feel and results, don't know what program tho.

in 2015 i used final cut for another company i was working at website's and youtube page (boring)
with heavy photoshop that consisted of over 45 minute to 1.5 hour presentation videos of business and other jargon
on a MacBook pro 2012 without a hitch or any fan noise.

the best bet would be those new MacBooks for battery life and speed if your into ,but anyone legit pro laptop will do the trick!

oh iMovie, My 2010 MacBook air nailed a large video of my friends trip to Sweeden with his family in 2012.
they even made a VCR and DVD of that back then

OP:

You'll probably do fine with either the MBP 14" (base model with 16gb of RAM).
or...
If you're anticipating 4k video, you might consider the basic model BUT raise the RAM to 32gb.

thanks everybody!!

My 2010 and 2012 MacBook Air laptops stil work today. The 2012 was a daily driver until it was replaced by an M1 Air early this year.
