Background: I have two Macbook pros. I also have a 2nd generation 12.9 IPad Pro that I am going to trade in (along with one of the MBPs) for a new IPad Pro. I will keep only one of the MBPs. I would love some comments for which computer you would rather keep. The first computer is a 2015 13” MBP, 256 GB storage, 8gb Ram, 2.7GHz Intel core i5. The second is a 2012 mid cMBP non-retina, 2.5 GHz intel core i5 that I would swap out the old HDD for a 500GB SSD and up the Ram to 16GB. This computer was bought new on clearance from Apple Store three years ago and has barely been used. The 2015 has been used in a normal way for the last 4 years and still runs great. The computer I retain will spend a large amount of time target-displayed to a 27” 2009 iMac. Thanks again for any thoughts or comments.

I write articles, novels, and short stories. I have several writing apps, and various other programs open at one time, but nothing that requires a lot of computer power. I also have business apps and software that pertain to the insurance industry that I use for my day job, but again, they don’t need a lot of computing power. I also take photos and edit them, but that is a hobby. No gaming or anything too intensive. Thanks!

I'd go with the 2015. I have a 2015 13, 2015 15 and a 2014 15. They all work great. I suspect that my applications are more intensive than yours are.

I would keep the 2012 as I often use the DVD drive on mine and the battery is not Glued-In like the newer MBP models and thus is user replaceable. With MacOS Sierra & the HFS file system it runs older 32bit programs of which many of mine are.
PLUS looking at resale prices you can get more for your 2015 ($600-700), see the marketplace here.

I have both of those MBP’s you have, no brainer to keep 2015 13” MBP, it’s retina display, lighter/thinner/faster/better battery life, upgradable to faster cheaper NVME drives.
Even my 2012 MBP was Raid0 setup was no match with 2015 13” cheap 1TB NVME drive.

I would also vote for keeping the 2015 MBP. Considerably more modern, with much better display (a lot less eye strain), faster, lighter, thinner.

Thanks for everyone’s responses. I will go with the consensus and keep the 2015 MBP. I do need to to get the screen replaced (again!) as it is looking stained and seems to be breaking down. I do love this computer but this screen issue is the one thing I don’t like about it. Again, thanks.

I agree, I like the keyboard on both the 2012 and the 2015, but not so much the newer MBPs.

I tolerate the keyboard on the 2015 and earlier models. My favorite were the 2008 keyboard with the sculpted keys. I'm sure I would really hate the post 2015 keyboards. I use an external mechanical keyboard most of the time but I can work with the 2014 and 2015s.
