So who do we believe?
The respected Arstechnica who know how to test things properly
or
U.K. Consumers' Association magazine Which?

I think the answer is obvious.

Why do carriers still have voice plans?!

to milk us for more money :p

Canadian TelCo's only give you data if you buy a voice plan. the vocie plan will typically be around $55/mth, but if you want data, it starts going up. They also treat them as two seperate contracts. To Get phone, with 2gb of data, expect to pay up to $90/mth

Because a new ceramic glass iPhone won't have hissing, poor battery, won't be scratchable and overall a "Dud device"? Please explain how a new case will fix these issues.
Ceramic glass is tough and difficult to scratch. By the time the next phone arrives, the drama of hissing video recordings will be resolved, so will the battery issues through software updates and better design.
Next year is the sweet spot. This is experiment on customers year.

I'm sure it will be flawless, just like every new iPhone (except the 7, apparently).

As did my 6 plus, however...my 7 plus beats it with the same usage. :)

FTFY!

In your experience......others are seeing different results. I'm regularly seeing 36-48hrs standby with upto 12hrs usage.

I make very few calls on my iPhone, and if you look at the battery threads, a lot of people are the same......at least judging by the lack of "Phone" in the battery usage screenshots.
It's not an opinion. It's fact. So much controversy with this year's iPhone device. I wouldn't touch it.

Apple has churned through billions in R&D, what did it get for it? Hissing iPhones. Antenna lines. Protruding cameras. Poor battery life. And so on.

iPhone 7 (aka iPhone 6 Series 3) is rubbish. I'm over it. Bring me 2017. The next all new iPhone in 2017 is where it's at.

I've had noticeably better battery life on my iPhone 7 than on my AT&T S7 Edge. My S7 Edge would struggle to make it through the day and would always die overnight if I didn't charge it. The iPhone 7 makes it all day without any issues at all... including waking up to ~20% battery life when I forget to charge it overnight. Anecdotal, I know. But for me the iPhone 7 battery life has been great!

iPhone 7 has to be the most flawed of the releases to date across a variety of indicators including design and functionality. I'm excited for next year already.

Fido / Rogers have data only plans for tablets.

Whats stopping you from using one of those plans?

They are :p
They make it difficult, and costly to do a BYOD tablet plan.

For example, their cheapest plan seems attractive enough at $5... for 10mb of data, and that plan will then charge you up to $40 for if you go past 10MB. yes. thats MB

Its easier to just show the BYOD rate plans to see what sort of Shenanigans these guys are pulling, to try and make it difficult for most people just to get a cheap data plan, oh and JUST to make it more difficult if you buy your device through them, you can only choose the $5 rate plan..

also, Bell won't even let you BYOD for mobile data. You must either get a device on plan or pay all up front for a device

In other news... an SUV has larger fuel tanks than an SMART car and a candy bar has more calories than popcorn.

A 4.7" phone vs 5.1", 5.3" and 5.2", yea there's less runtime because there's less room for battery. This result should shock no-one since each of the other phones have batteries in the 2.8-3Ah range while the 7 is 1.9Ah.
A phone call is a phone call, there's very little that can be optimized there, what's amazing is that the iPhone 7 keeps up with the other phones pretty well where Apple can optimize for power in the browsing test.

Try comparing phone sizes, not screen size. If Android devices can get 2x more talk time by having the phone 2mm wider and 0.8mm thicker, I'll take it.

138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1 mm iPhone 7
145.9 x 71.9 x 9.0 mm HTC 10
149.4 x 73.9 x 7.7 mm LG 5
142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9 mm S7

Ive's relentless pursuit of thinness comes at a cost: Battery life. I honestly don't need a phone that fits inside the sliver of space beneath a rock formation, the revolution Apple needs to pursue is in battery capacity, even if has the chance of causing Ive PTSD from sacrificing a few millimeters of thickness off the phone, it's worth it.

Poor battery life is still the worst thing about owning an iPhone but I don't think Apple will do anything about it because presumably "thinner design" sells more new iPhones than "longer battery life".

I'm assuming there is a whole army of people out there who never actually use their iPhone that much. They just sit around gazing in wonderment at how amazing it is.

Who makes phone calls any more? The iPhone 7 only loses badly on battery life while making phone calls. Using Wifi for internet use, it's neck and neck, and something people wouldn't notice.

It's an article with a misleading headline to get the anti-Apple people riled up and feeling superior. It means nothing in real life.

I do, and so would you...

1. Emergency calls to 911 ambulance, police or fire department
2. Doctors/ dentists appointments
3. Restaurant reservations
4. Many hotel reservation follow ups
5. Many cable company follow ups for issues with your modem
Etc. etc.

I have a 7+ and the battery life is great, certainly better than the 1 hour extra battery life it promises over my old 6s+.

It's also worth noting that Which aims its market at tech illiterate people. For ease of use Apple products usually come out on top, however they usually advise you not to get them overall because of costs. Their market is people who don't have much nor want to spend much money and only get things because 'suppose I have too' reasons. As a result it's hardly surprising that they are coming up with reasons to not advise people on getting an Apple product, no one wants to be told to pay more for something they don't really want.

Test is relevant/related to my use case. Using 3G/LTE while commuting, using 3G/LTE @ work because I don't like restricted company WiFi. I don't even pick-up my phone @ home, it is just chillin' on WiFi.

Worse than Antenna-gate and the Maps disaster? Honest question.

And who's still using 3G? What are the LTE stats?

Most consumers compare screen size when deciding between phones, not the actual dimensions of the handsets. All the practical time spent with a smartphone is taken up staring at the display, so the screen size is a relevant factor here.

Also displays on smartphones take up like 80% of battery power and it takes more energy to power a brighter, higher quality display (hint: iPhone 7) over a larger but poorer quality screen.

https://www.macrumors.com/2016/09/19/iphone-7-best-lcd-display-ever-displaymate/

And there's variations between LCD and OLED power consumption. The LCD screen Apple uses is brilliant but it draws more power because every pixel is always on, whatever is displayed on the screen, but the OLED is more sensitive to what's being shown on it so that affects power as well.

What would people rather have: better battery life or a better (i.e. not necessarily bigger) display? There has to be compromise somewhere.

Has anyone done the maths on this? Battery size mAh divided by minutes. This new number you can then compare as they all have the same dominator.

Looks like Which? has a HTC sponsor!

Article Link: Which? Magazine Claims iPhone 7 Has 'Poor Battery Life' Compared to Rival Smartphones

I agree that this would be the the most fair representation of battery life, but I would guess that typical phone costumers have no idea what mAh are or know how much a particular phone has. They only care about how long it lasts, not necessarily efficiency.

Your two picked charts don't actually contradict the idea that the 3g time and talk time are somehow less.
True but that's not the claim I am making. my claim is that the "iPhone 7 Has 'Poor Battery Life' Compared to Rival Smartphones" that the magazine claims is totally bogus as they are using a specific set of tests to prove in one special case that the iPhone 7 has poor battery life. Totally not a general useage scenario.

All these prove (if the magazine is not giving us false test results) is in different scenarios the iphone 7 has varying battery performance when compared to the competition, sometimes better and sometimes worse.

Also 3G tests need to be standardised. You could have the iPhone further from the 3G tower then the competition to give a false result as the iPhone has a weaker 3G signal to work with.
