Which 15 inch MBP does NOT have graphic card failure? It seems everyone model I look up has a card that will eventually fail. I just want to know which models/years version of the 15" MBP is safe to buy? Thanks.

Probably the current 2015 on there with integrated graphics is the safest.

They've had issues but it's not a 100% failure rate or anything, it's just been the primary point of failure. So you could have one for 5 years without issue or it could be 5 months. If you really just want piece of mind then get a refurb one with Apple Care and don't worry about it.

The actual MacBooks don't have known graphic card failures. I have one with a Radeon Pro 560 and it works flawlessly...
There were some problems with models between 2011 and 2013 of retina MacBooks. This problems are known and Apple has a repair extension program for customers who are affected...

Apple has a website where you can find the infos you are looking for:

I definitely agree with the Apple Care but I can't justify $2000+ for a laptop. I was thinking more for an older version after they changed to icore but not brand new. I do like the refurb idea though.

That link is golden thank you. It shows that they stopped fixing the 2011 versions

Every model is "safe to buy" except the 2011 one.

Um, no. Every model is not safe to buy. Some models have widely known issues like dedicated graphics card EVENTUALLY dying leaving you with a useless slab of aluminum.

The late 2013 and 2014 models with the 750M are proven solid (however, they are very obsolete - the iGPU on the base model 13-inch nTB can equal their performance in most cases.) The 2015 with the M370X has performed well, but over somewhat less time. The 460 and 560 and their variants have also performed well, but again over less time.

Unless you want to buy a laptop with a very obsolete GPU (in which case an iGPU model might make more sense), unfortunately buying a laptop of any brand with a dGPU is somewhat of a calculated risk 🙁

Apparently there's a workaround. You can just turn off the discrete gpu so if it's failed it'll just run off the integrated card. Sweet!

Edit: it seems to be the AMD chips that fail and I really want the laptop for the quad core cpu power. The gpu is just a nice bonus. I've used an Intel hd 3000+ and it handle my needs.

2015 “Haswell/Crystalwell” iGPU. 128M eDram helps but it is not as powerful as a discrete GPU .

Another for the 2013/2014 models. Your wise to be careful as the vast majority of 15"MBP's with dGPU have had issues due to Apple's poor cooling solutions, with only the 2016 model really getting ahead of this.

Patience may result in a 2015 model without the dGPU becoming available, or opt for a new one direct from Apple

The 2015 dGPU model is known for throttling, but I haven’t heard of many failure issues. I’d probably look for a 2015 iGPU model, there in one on CL near me with a 512 GB Drive for $1000. The iGPU in these models is decently powerful, and you don’t have to worry about any potential dGPU issues.

I think Apple fixed the issue an anything beyond 2011 is safe. I have a 2012 model and its been going strong for these past 5 1/2 years

For longevity and "robustness", I'd suggest the 2015 MBPro w/integrated graphics.

These are still available "as new units" from Apple, or as Apple-refurbished for a little less $$$.

They have a full complement of legacy ports, -and- a keyboard that won't fail on you...
