I've been a committed iCloud email user for about 10 years - it's simple, worked well, and was easy to manage among multiple devices (MacBook, iPad, iPhone). Then about 2 months ago I began to experience a snowballing set of issues -- most dramatically, all the emails in my iCloud.com inbox disappearing (which Apple was able to restore) as well as mailboxes spontaneously reloading, devices not syncing with each other, deleted mail winding up in Junk or Archive, and other weirdness that doesn't seem to be caused by my hardware or my Wifi network. My case was escalated to the engineers but there has been no resolution so far.

After 7000 emails disappeared from iCloud.com overnight and are now in the process of (hopefully) being restored, I've begun to think that I need to consider switching to a new email provider, however tedious the changeover might be. So my question is: Which do you recommend?

I don't need a business account nor do I need a suite of services like word processing etc. And I confess I like folders (though I don't want that to be a dealbreaker since I imagine many of you use Gmail). I would even be willing to pay for an email account if there were benefits to doing so.

Lastly, if the email can be backed up that would be great, since it is not possible to back up iCloud emails (so far as I know).

Thanks! Ellen

If you are using Apple Mail on your Mac, all messages are download to your Mac and, by default, are included in a Time Machine backup.

And your main question: Gmail or MS Mail (whatever it is called now - hotmail, live, outlook).

Protonmail works well for me. I pay for a Plus account which enables me to use my custom domain. The folder structure is decent.

If you don't mind paying for email service then you probably won't mind paying an extra $10 per year to have your own domain name. If you have your own domain name, you can have its email hosted by one of many different services and change service in the event you don't like the one you're on. This is the main benefit of your own domain for email.

Are there any other features you think you'd want…like "push", robust server-side rules, email aliases, maximum storage etc?

Thanks I use iCloud mail not the “On My Mac” mail.

Thanks. A few email aliases and “push” - since I get that with iCloud. Am less concerned about storage because it is not a business account but right now I pay .99 cents a month for the Apple 50 GB plan and all my iCloud files inc. mail are less than 10 GB.

nothing google!
and
Outlook works great on those apple devices!
and ya don't hafta bend the knee or sign up with Microsoft to get one!
protonmail is good as well!

Do you care if you have to change your email address again due to you not liking the service…for whatever reason?

I would hope not to have to do that - given all the accounts I would need to update.

One suggestion for Fastmail. Very fast, people who care about email (they even extended the IMAP protocol (JMAP)). Calendar and Contact sync. No problems here. $32/year
