I went with the seagate, and mostly because I didn't feel like waiting for the 500GB with 7400RPM and the reviews seem to be more favorable (just slightly). Below is how is all went down after I got the drive

Had some initial problems after installing in the mbp because the Drive wasn't formated (well duh I knew that, but I thought I could do this from the Leopard Boot-up CD).

So I had to take it out, put it in an enclosure , which luckily I had bought (to put the old drive in) and formated from Disk Utility. Then re-inserted back to the mbp and all was well.

You can. I've done it many times. You just launch Disk Utility from the menu bar once the initial boot screen has appeared. Not that there's anything wrong with the enclosure method, but it was overkill.

id go with seagate western digital has failed on me twice

I went with the Seagate and it failed within a week. :( --- I have the WD now and it's fine (about 2 months running now).

Any brand can have a lemon or two, but I think any of them are as good as any other overall. I'm personally curious about the Samsung and may order one for my wife's machine. Or I may go the 500GB 7200rpm route and let the wifey have this WD 500GB 5400rpm drive.

The Western Digital Scorpio Blue got a very good review in a recent issue of Maximum PC.

Also, it has a thinner form factor than the some of the other 500GB drives so you shouldn't have any fit issues.

anyone know what drives come in the current mbp's? specifically the 7200 rpm drive option. i've been contemplating doing an upgrade for a while and can't settle on a drive and wanted to compare with what apple is currently using. i did some searching and couldn't find a brand name or model number.

I put the western digital in my mbp a little while ago, and its work great. Its quiet, and definitely runs cooler than the original 120gb. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade.

I currently have a Western Digital Passport 320GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive (Model number: WDXMS3200TN | SKU: 8621397) I purchased back in March, 2008 and what I'm thinking of doing is replacing it with a Western Digital 500Gb portable drive powered by Firewire800 (I found out about this over on the Portable Hard Drive For FCP? thread.)

I was thinking I could maybe take the 320gb passport and put the hard drive in my 15" 2.2ghz MacBook Pro? I have only 120gb in there now.

from what i know

Hitachi 500GB cannt fit in cause it;s thicker

Samsung SpinPoint 500GB using 3 platter technology, thus a little bit slower and need more power consumption.

so this will let you with 2 option

Seagate 500GB

and

Western Digital 500GB

actually there's one more but it's not available yet

Seagate 7200rpm 500gb HDD.

anyway after thinkin and browsing several reviews site
i decided to get the seagate 500GB and i'm pleased by it
it's silent, ad i've been loyal costumer ffor seagate in the past couple of year.

it runs slightly hotter than my 250 GB seagate though.
but i haighly recommend them.

... looking at this, seems the WD could fit.

Does that sound like a good idea? Could I put the current 120gb hard drive that's in my MBP in my current WD Western Digital 320gb Passport's enclosure after I take it out? I was thinking of putting it in my PS3 actually, but I think I should keep the orig hard drive handy in case I have to send back to Apple right? Or maybe when I want to put back in my MBP when I want to sell it (probably in the summer of 2010 - before the Appleare runs out).

I just replaced my HD and bought this one from Newegg:

*Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 5400 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive - OEM $109.99

I've never had a problem with any WD drives in the past, and this one is no exception to that. It's been performing beautifully since I've installed it, quiet, no heat issues or anything else yet. Only been running for about a month, but so far so good. For the record, I have a MB Pro Santa Rosa 2.2. I also ordered 4 gigs of ram to go with it, got the 2 sticks of 2 gigs for $15.99 each and it's also been working wonderfully.

Nice, that's exactly what I have. I myself purchased Transcend RAM for my 15" 2.2ghz MBP back in November 2007. Paid $80 total for the two DDR2 2GB PC5300 SO-D TRA (+$10 shipping). I actually did have a problem w/ those RAM modules back in Spring '08, but Transcend swapped it out for me and the new Modules have been working fine ever since.
